The first challenge sees the contestants follow a deceptively difficult pattern for a woman's top made up of four pieces, before they have to transform a maternity dress in just 90 mins and fit a skirt to a real model in the final task.
I do wish they'd include some non-dressmaking items! It's called Sewing Bee not Tailoring Bee.
There's a lot of dressmaking, but very little tailoring, which is usually to imply a lot of hand finishing and mainly applied to jackets.
They did have some non-dressmaking in the first series, such as a bag, a cushion and an apron which had Claudia doing the voiceover for the instructions. There was also a Christmas special which involved making gifts and decorations. But I think they've made the challenges more complex since so there isn't time to include much else other than general sewing for something like a child's fancy dress costume. Last year's sewing a leather jacket was quite advanced for a dressmaker.
Amazon has the book to accompany the new series "The Great British Sewing Bee: from Stitch to Style" by Wendy Gardiner at £17.00 (RRP £25.00) for pre-order with delivery on the day of release, 19th May.
Think I'll wait until it's out and have a look at it before buying.
That's naughty. It was originally going to be released on 5th May when the programme was due to start, but when the broadcast date was postponed until the 16th, the book release was also supposed to be delayed until then as well so they happened together.
I particularly liked what Esme Young says: “I’ll probably find it quite hard not to say what I think” and “It fits well under her a*se” Looks like she'll be honest in her comments.
What the frack are they going to be sewing that it needs to be shown after the watershed?!
Nothing. They probably think 'Choose the Right Puppy' will have a bigger audience at 8 pm than Sewing Bee would.
And of course, being on a Monday evening, they wouldn't want it to clash with Eastenders at 8 pm or (less bothered about) the second part of Coronation Street at 8.30 pm.
Well that's just annoying. I go to bed between 9 and 10 (I know, I'm rock and roll) because of work, now I'll have to stick my fingers in my ears each time I go into the staff room or face me being grumpy due to lack of shut eye.
10 of them - 7 men, 3 women. The youngest is 18 and looks like the oldest 71.
Disappointing that some of them have careers in sewing, well dressmaking at least (thought they were all supposed to be amateurs), but perhaps they'll fall down on the more creative tasks.

May wasn't asked back for this series. There was a new producer who wanted to change things and get someone new. Also, she wasn't into the after party socialising scene, rather preferring to go home after filming, and they wanted someone who would be prepared to do more promotion on the London scene.
I was beginning to think it's political correctness gone mad. Not that there'd be anything wrong with that line-up, obviously! It would just be very unexpected.
Very exited. Looks like a good mix of characters and backgrounds. I know she can be seen as 'marmite' but am glad Claudia is back as I love how much she seems to enjoy the programme and the people.
Comments
I think it is earlier than before - I hope it doesn't clash with anything else I'm watching.
Yes, sure it was 8pm - 9pm before
Thank you so much for the info, will set the planner as I'm away then

Waterstones website seems to indicate they have it in their stores now, if you put your postcode into the click & collect box it tells you about stock.

I'll go with the latter, I'll be brave.
I've missed this programme :-)
Line up for this year's show on several sites, including:

Line up looks very BBC PC diverse , lets hope theyve been chosen on ability
And you can bet that had it been an all-white lineup, there would have been cries of "where are the BAME" contestants?"

Heard on my local radio that the venue is new as well as the new judge. Hadn't realised that.
Anyone seen the book yet?
Am so looking forward to tonight
