Comic-Con: The New Characters Joining Marvel’s ‘Agents of SHIELD’
    Marc Graser
    Senior Editor @marcgraser

The second season of Marvel’s “Agents of SHIELD” will add at least four new characters to the series, including a new villain, the company announced Friday at Comic-Con in San Diego.

Lucy Lawless has been confirmed to play Isabelle Hartley, a tough longtime SHIELD veteran who is good with a knife.

British newcomer Nick Blood will play mercenary Lance Hunter, who will assist the SHIELD agents. The character is best known for being the director of S.T.R.I.K.E., a British intelligence agency that worked with Captain America and Captain Britain to defeat Red Skull.

The newest villain to the show, Daniel Whitehall, will be played by Reed Diamond. The character is a member of Hydra and known by his alias the Kraken, who when wearing his signature helmet, is covered in body armor. In the comicbooks, he spends decades training Hydra agents at a school for orphaned girls to become human weapons.

SHIELD agent Barbara Morse, also known as Mockingbird, will be the next significant comicbook hero to join the series. The character, who gets her name for taunting her opponents in battle, has close ties to Clint Barton (Hawkeye) and the Avengers in the books. No actress was announced.

And Patton Oswalt will return to the series, in which he guest starred as Agent Koenig, only this time, he plays twins, Sam and Billy.

The series started shooting its newest episodes on July 24.

Looks like Skye might be an Inhuman. According to Collider, an Inhumans script's been written.

    http://collider.com/the-inhumans-movie-joe-robert-cole-script/

Exclusive: Marvel Moving Forward on THE INHUMANS Movie; Screenplay by Joe Robert Cole

Guardians of the Galaxy was Marvel’s big gamble on whether or not they could sell a group of unknown characters in a unique world based on the studio’s brand alone. They won that bet, and now it’s given Marvel the confidence to move forward on another team of mostly unknown, strange characters: The Inhumans. As we reported back in March 2011, the studio was considering adapting the comic into a movie. In July 2012, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told Entertainment Weekly that if either Guardians or The Inhumans became a movie, audiences could expect an “X-Men-style ensemble, a la The Avengers.” In a broad sense, that’s true: A team of misfits and outsiders comes together to battle a larger foe; beyond that, I doubt many would compare Guardians to X-Men or The Avengers. But for over two years, there was no word on The Inhumans.

The other day, Vin Diesel dropped a hint about being part of The Inhumans, and it turns out he wasn’t just blowing smoke. The studio is happy with the existing script by Joe Robert Cole, and now the next logical step is to take it out to filmmakers. Hit the jump for more.

inhumans-comic-book-coverAccording to our sources, Marvel plans to handle The Inhumans in the same way they handled Guardians of the Galaxy. For those who don’t know, the original draft of Guardians was written by Nicole Perlman, who was part of Marvel’s writing program. That draft then went out to filmmakers. When James Gunn came on board, he added his flavor and details to the story, but the characters, story structure, and beats from Perlman’s draft remained in place. As Adam explained in his recent editorial, directors are brought on board to execute a specific vision.

Cole also came out of Marvel’s writing program, and the studio is pleased with his script, so now they’re presumably ready to take it out to filmmakers. We can also assume that since Guardians was a success, the studio is willing to bring on a director with a unique voice like Gunn. He didn’t upend the Marvel formula, but his personality flows through the picture. He was in tune with a group of oddball outsiders, and that made him the best man for the job.

So who’s the best choice for The Inhumans? Briefly, the Inhumans were created by alien experiments on primitive homo-sapiens. The alien race behind the experiments, the Kree, abandoned their work and the Inhumans went on to form a society of their own, which is led by the king Black Bolt and his family Medusa, Karnak, Gorgon, Triton, Crystal, Maximus the Mad, and the canine Lockjaw. For more on The Inhumans, read Marvel’s wiki page.

Our sources tell us that this movie is part of Marvel not only expanding its list of properties, but actively building a multiple-film cosmic universe.

To be clear, we don’t know the details about this script, and we don’t know the directors the studio has on its wish list. What we know is that Marvel is ready to move forward on The Inhumans, and we’re hearing it will take one of the dates on their current schedule.

So, if it turns out Skye's an inhuman monster... I'd tune in to find out.

Just found this, according to Bret Dalton:

    1. Ward is an anti-hero.
    2. Ward did NOT kill Buddy the dog!
    3. A redemptive arc might be in the works.

    http://io9.com/how-soon-could-grant-ward-find-redemption-on-agents-of-1613606987
How Soon Could Grant Ward Find Redemption On Agents Of SHIELD?

Agent Grant Ward went to some really dark places in the tail end of Agents of SHIELD's first season. Can he come back from that? We caught up with actor Brett Dalton and he told us his hopes for Grant's future. Plus J. August Richards told us what's in store for the killer cyborg Deathlok. Spoilers ahead...

We were lucky enough to talk to Dalton and Richards about Agents of SHIELD on the red carpet at Entertainment Weekly's San Diego Comic-Con party, and here's what they told us:

    Brett Dalton:

We were glad that Grant Ward didn't get redeemed at the end of season one. But what happens now? Are you hoping Grant will find a way to redeem himself in the first episode of the new season? Or will it take longer?

    Brett Dalton:
I'm thankful that the writers didn't try to rush that redemption. Because I was reading Twitter as it was happening, and people were loving the turn — but they were also like really... They didn't want it to be redeemed and bought back too quickly. So I was really happy we didn't do that last season. Now that we have season two, we have 22 episodes more to explore that. So I think really the question is, "Who is Grant Ward?" You know, he's done some good things, he's done some bad things. But I don't know if he's a villain or a hero. I think he's more of an anti-hero than a villain. He's somewhere in between.

How Soon Could Grant Ward Find Redemption On Agents Of SHIELD?

    Brett Dalton:
He killed a bunch of people. He killed Patton Oswalt. Sure, there was another Patton Oswalt, but he killed a Patton Oswalt.

Yes. Look, has he killed people? Yes. But he has also not killed his dog, and witnessed his brother drown in a well, and there's a million other things that have happened. So I think his loyalty was more to Agent [John Garrett] — to Bill Paxton — than it was to Hydra. So I think that we have another opportunity to figure out who this guy is.

So he didn't kill his dog? A lot of us thought he did.

    Brett Dalton:
I know. It was supposed to be ambiguous. According to me, he did not. It's open to interpretation, but I'll answer that: No. Because it's irredeemable. You can't kill a dog! If you do that, you're just done. So, redemption arc? It's just going to be dead in the water. You can't kill a dog.

Some of my favorite scenes are towards the end, when Skye tells him 'You're basically a Nazi,' and he's like 'No, no, no, it's not like that.' How is it not like he's a Nazi?

    Brett Dalton:
Well, look. Hydra's re-branded, OK? We're getting away from the Nazi thing. We're getting more into the slick beard [strokes his own beard] — we're changing things up. No, I don't know. That was an interesting thing to do. But as I said, his loyalty was more to Garrett than it was to Hydra. So I think that he's still a good guy — and Hashtag #StandwithWard!

I like the part where Ward is under the control of Lorelei, but he's still very matter of fact, saying "I know I'm just an expendable tool to you." He's under her spell, but still a realist.

    Brett Dalton:
Yeah, he's smart. He never turns that off. Once you have that assassin brain on, I mean — he's a trained specialist. He's a trained killer. So you know, that's not something you can just turn off.

But he really does care about Skye? That's not just another game?

    Brett Dalton:
    Those feelings are real. Yeah.

And there's a Deathlok thing or two:

    http://io9.com/how-soon-could-grant-ward-find-redemption-on-agents-of-1613606987
    J. August Richards:

Michael Peterson's son has been rescued now. Is Deathlok going to be basically a good guy from here on out? Can he come back from all the things he did?

Who knows? Mike Peterson, Deathlok, is feeling so guilty for the things that he did. And my dream for the character is just that he would reunite with his son [and] give him a great big hug. Because that's all he ever wanted in the first place. So that's my hope.

Do you think he can repair his relationship with his son, after he got held prisoner in an evil office suite?

    J. August Richards:
You know, the difference between me and my character is that he's very guilty. He feels a lot of guilt about things. So I don't know if he will ever forgive himself for what he allowed to happen. But if it were me, there would be nothing that would stop me from reuniting with my son.

Do you think Deathlok could eventually join the team and part of the SHIELD crew?

    J. August Richards:
Well, I think to be on the SHIELD team, you can't quite have superpowers — to be one of the agents. Hopefully, he will be under the control of SHIELD as a full-blown superhero. Right now, I think he's just trying to get right with himself and find redemption within. That can be a long journey. We'll see what happens.

How far do you think the cyborg transformation can go? Could he have a computer in his brain? In the Deathlok comics, he's got a computer in his brain, feeding him info. And he's always arguing with it.

    J. August Richards:
Right. I think we're kinda halfway there. We don't know the extent to which the Clairvoyant manipulated his body. He's got that metal on the side of his face [and] the eye. So there's no telling how much tech is in his body.

Have you read the Deathlok comics?

    J. August Richards:
I have. I did, to do research for the character. I read various iterations of the character, because there were three. Eventually, I decided, though, that I had to stick with the information that we were using on the show.

In some versions, he's kind of a zombie.

In some versions, he's a zombie. In some versions, he's fully under the control of the machine. In some versions, he has control over the machine. But we're doing something very unique and very specific with the character.

So he could turn into something more like RoboCop, almost.

    J. August Richards:
Well, he was before RoboCop. I feel like Deathlok was the original. Terminator, RoboCop, Cyborg — it all started with Deathlok.

Do you think Deathlok is going to get a love interest? He kind of had a thing with Skye for a moment.

    J. August Richards:
That would be interesting. Making love to somebody with a cyborg leg might be interesting.

    I want to see that!

Well, you and me both. I want to do that!

    Erm.... No.

He's not the writer. It's ambiguous. He doesn't think the character did it. Doesn't mean the character didn't do it.
The rest of the quote sounds tongue in cheek about harming animals in tv and real life. Some people seems to care more about animals than humans.

don't get too excited because the show won't have the budget to do anything fancy

Well, I agree Vin Diesel as Black Bolt woud be cost prohibitive BUT if I remeber right, BB did go to New York during the Jack Kirby era and wore a suit and tie (actually a trenchcoat) while concealing his powers most of the time.

When Marvel Tried To Make An Inhumans Movie 14 Years Ago
Posted on August 14, 2014 by Rich Johnston

Bleeding Cool has been writing for some time about Marvel’s move to prioritise The Inhumans as a major property in Marvel comics, with an eye toward creating a new movie franchise.

The comic book series Inhuman and the crossover event Inhumanity, spread the Inhumans – people with a lineage of alien DNA, and powers that emerge on contact with the Terrigen Mists – across the world.

This was an intentional act to create an alternative to the mutant population of the X-Men comic books. Marvel cannot make films or TV shows of the X-Men properties, as the rights were bought by Fox during Marvel’s term in bankruptcy, as were the rights to the Fantastic Four.

But they can make films starring The Inhumans, Or at least, they can now…

But in the year 2000, they couldn’t. Dave Elliott tells me that he was involved with ex-Marvel movie mogul Avi Arad when he tried selling an Inhumans movie to Paramount, based on the Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee Eisner award-winning Marvel Knights series. But when Paramount didn’t like that, Elliott pitched the Neal Adams/Jack Kirby plot about Black Bolt coming to New York, as the backbone of the film.

Mike Mignola was going to do some of the redesigns, there was an animated spinoff planned, the film was financed, director attached and contracts signed. Elliott says he told folks to check their license contracts but Avi Arad told him they didn’t need to.

Paramount wanted to buy it, but when Marvel eventually did check their contracts, they found that Fox had the rights to use the Inhumans in films since their first appearance was in The Fantastic Four.

Marvel even offered the project to Fox, as it was fully funded, but Fox said no.

Well, just as there proved some wiggle room with Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, so Marvel Studios believe they have similar wiggle room now.

It may need a name change to Nuhmans, and they may need to use all the new characters they have been creating recently across the world, rather than Black Bolt, Medusa, Gorgon, Lockjaw and others from the original appearances.

But we know it’s happening. We may even have a plot.

And, this ties in to Skye when:

    http://www.bleedingcool.com/2014/08/13/so-what-is-going-on-with-the-inhumans-at-marvel-anyway-inhuman-spoiler/

Black Bolt (Vin Diesel) releases the Terrigen Mist to transform Humans into InHumans or NuHumans to fight an ancient Inhuman.

So What Is Going On With The Inhumans At Marvel Anyway (Inhuman SPOILER)
Posted on August 13, 2014 by Rich Johnston

Okay, so the Inhumans are being boosted up at Marvel at the moment. To be the publisher’s next big thing, X-Men replacement, spin off series, a movie on the way.

But, storywise, what’s going on? Why did Black Bolt usher in a new world generation of triggered Inhumans? Was it all about Thanos? Is there something else coming?

It seems not. A new Inhuman (although in some ways a very old one) pops up in Inhuman this week. And gives us a good bit of Basil Exposition to let us know Marvel’s plans for the characters.

Sooo, if this ties in with the Show, I can expect sometime either in S2 or S3 for Skye to become an InHuman... NuHuman... pending the copyright and trademark issues. :D

    That's great news!

It sets up a possible guest appearance for Mark Ruffalo to tie-in to the rumored Hulk movie as the character gets re-positioned for other MARVEL films.

    http://screenrant.com/planet-hulk-avengers-age-of-ultron-spoilers/

    Planet Hulk Movie Story Line
Bruce Banner The Future of Mark Ruffalos Hulk After The Avengers 2

Ever since Mark Ruffalo took to the stage at San Diego Comic-Con 2010 alongside the full cast of The Avengers and was officially announced to be playing Bruce Banner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans have wondered if and when Ruffalo’s Banner would get a chance leading a third Hulk movie. That curiosity turned into legitimate discussion when the Hulk became a fan-fave thanks to The Avengers hitting theaters in 2012 and becoming the third top-grossing film of all-time.

5 Superhero Roles Almost Given to Someone Else

There was just something special to seeing Hulk smashing on Captain America’s (Chris Evans) orders and Banner and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) sharing lab space and techy banter (the “science bros.”). With Ruffalo having signed a six-picture deal with Marvel Studios and The Avengers 1 & 2 writer-director Joss Whedon “believing” in the character – and happy to have him sort of exclusively for The Avengers: Age of Ultron – Ruffalo cannot avoid being grilled on the subject everywhere he makes an appearance.

We already know the Hulk will get even more screen time in his Age of Ultron return and there were rumors in early 2013 that this movie could launch (literally) Hulk into a position where he’d get a Planet Hulk/World War Hulk storyline from the comics and potentially, a new solo movie. That story from the comics essentially involves Hulk losing control and Earth’s heroes feeling they have no other choice but to launch him into space. He lands on an alien planet (of a species featured in next month’s Guardians of the Galaxy movie, no less) and becomes a gladiator, fighting in a Roman-style arena. Without getting into too much detail, some bad stuff happens and Hulk comes back to Earth on a mission of vengeance.

Mark Ruffalo Hulk Movie Potential 1024x576 The Future of Mark Ruffalos Hulk After The Avengers 2

At the time, Ruffalo and Whedon shot down the rumors, but just last week Ruffalo went on record hinting that Marvel is indeed considering a new Hulk film. Of course, he can’t tell us either way even if they were, but chances are Ruffalo and Whedon have a pretty good idea of where Bruce Banner and “The Other Guy” are headed given that producer and Marvel Studios president of production has mapped out the Marvel Cinematic Universe all the way to 2028.

Update: Great timing! Sideshow Collectibles just unveiled on July 2, 2014, a Marvel King Hulk Marvel Premium Format(TM) Figure that is now available for pre-order and begins shipping in July.

    The KING HULK storyline:

Betrayed by those he once called allies, and exiled to the savage alien world of Sakaar, the fearsome Hulk smashed, bled, and conquered his way from slave to gladiator, and then to king. Crowned with a gleaming diadem, the mighty victor finally found peace in his kingdom, until a tragic turn of events brought Hulk’s world crashing down once again and set him on a new path of destruction.

Fueled by rage, and stronger than ever before, the volatile King Hulk is out for blood, girded for war in his gladiator attire and spiked armored gauntlet. Wielding a massive broadsword and deadly battle axe, the unstoppable World Breaker returns to seek vengeance and tear the Earth to shreds. Towering almost 30″ tall over the cracked and broken streets of New York City, he is the Green Scar, the Eye of Anger, the Hulk… and he has come home.

Ruffalo’s latest thoughts on the next Hulk movie are that it shouldn’t be about Planet Hulk though, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get something similar or parts of those storylines adapted…

The most identifiable trait for Bruce Banner is his inner battle with himself over control. When he loses control, he becomes the “enormous green rage monster.” Neither Banner or Hulk has full control at any time but since we’ve seen this battle play out multiple times, there’s only so much that can be done with that plot device, which lead many to believe Hulk’s best utilized as a supporting character. Despite Banner seemingly gaining a semblance of control over his anger issues and his alter ego at the end of The Avengers, it’s a safe bet he can’t keep that up in Age of Ultron. That just wouldn’t be fun and everyone wants to see the Hulkbuster in action.

According to HitFix, who shared some spoilers behind a lot of what Mark Ruffalo has been dancing around in interviews, there’s a way to use Ruffalo/Hulk as a supporting character and still do something similar to Planet Hulk.

    * Final Warning: Major Spoilers Ahead *

    **

    ***

avengers age ultron logo The Future of Mark Ruffalos Hulk After The Avengers 2

HitFix claims that the third act of Age of Ultron, which of course involves a final confrontation with Ultron (James Spader), also sees Banner on The Avengers’ new Quinjet leaving Earth’s orbit with no way to stop it or turn it around. HitFix speculates that this could feasibly lead to Hulk meeting up with the Guardians of the Galaxy and that event could be the bridge which sees the Guardians and Hulk return to Earth in time for The Avengers 3, likely in 2018, very likely bringing the big bad villain Thanos to Earth as well. This is how you get the very large team-up of The Avengers and Guardians against Thanos.

Much of that is speculation, and all of it is unverified at this point, but we’ve long heard reports and rumors of how The Avengers 2 will re-position Hulk in an important way, similar to how it’ll serve as a launchpad for other characters and their stories (i.e. Captain America 3 and Thor 3).

It’s very unlikely that if Hulk were to get another movie that it’d happen anytime soon, and almost certainly it wouldn’t fit into Phase 3 which is quickly running out of release dates. The running assumption is that The Avengers 3 is coming in 2018, and since we know Captain America 3 and Doctor Strange are coming in 2016, that leaves Thor 3 and one unknown for 2017 which is going to be a new property (The Inhumans or Black Panther or something else). But if there’s no hulk, where does that leave him and the Guardians before The Avengers 3? Could that tie into 2017′s mystery movie or could the third Avengers team-up taking another year to fit another pair of movies in?

But would the showrunners truly do a tie-in with AoS, effectively making the show a season long commercial for the movies?

I really hope that they don't turn Ward back into a good guy in season 2 as he was so boring as a good guy in the first half of season 1!

It seems like Agents Of SHIELD will have lots of competition as comic book tv show with The Flash and Constantine joining Arrow on the small screen. So Marvel really need to raise its game for the 2nd season which I think can be seem by recent casting for the show!

Does anybody have any idea when Channel 4 will start showing season 2 of Agents Of SHIELD?

Also will Channel 4 be showing Agent Carter as it seems like those two shows will be closely linked?

Well, probably not that closely linked (apart from flashbacks etc.), as they are set in different era's.

Yeah that is true but they will still be linked and both are shows based around SHIELD just in different eras. Also Agent Carter will be shown in the gap when Agents Of SHIELD is off air!

It just makes sense for Agent Carter to shown on Channel 4 but you never know!

    I hope it's not a flashback...

    Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. / 8 Sep 2014
Hayley Atwell Guest Starring on Agents of SHIELD Premiere
Peggy Carter to make an appearance in the Agents of SHIELD season opener.

    By Matt Fowler

Though she needs no formal introduction, Hayley Atwell will be making her Marvel TV debut before her own series, Marvel's Agent Carter, kicks off this winter - appearing as Peggy Carter in the Season 2 premiere of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on September 23rd.

Coulson and his team are now wanted fugitives with limited resources--but that's not stopping them from keeping the world safe from powerful and unseen threats everywhere. However, with new members they hardly know, will S.H.I.E.L.D. ever be trusted again?

And in the middle of the list of the episode's guest stars, "Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter" appears.

So the question now is: Will we see an elderly Peggy Carter, like we did in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, or will Peggy appear as her young self via a flashback or old video footage?

I guess you have not seen the photo online from the Agents Of SHIELD season 2 first episode which seems to confirm that it will be a flashback!

the showrunners have said that the premiere will feature
a time jump ie. a little time has passed

also the theme for s2 will be
evolution and fans are speculating from promo posters that Fitz could turn evil while Ward is redeemed

Fitz turning evil would tie in with my MODOK-like hopes for Fitz :D + my belief that Reed Diamond will be the big bad only for the 1st half of s2 (like David Conrad in s1)
