As a brand, what are Pentax like in terms of reliability and build quality compared to Nikon and Canon? I've never heard of Ricoh before.

Well.. People still use Pentax M42 and K lenses and some of their old film cameras are still going strong :)

It was one of those strange companies that seemed both innovative and backwards. It pioneered some features, but stuck to it's old screw mount when the other makers were going bayonet and adding more camera->lens control. Build quality was always solid & the LX was a popular pro camera due to it being smaller than competitors and pretty bomb-proof. It also made a nifty medium format camera (645) and this cute lil baby SLR-

I almost bought into the Pentax family for my first SLR with the ME. I couldn't afford the ME Super and the Olympus OM-10 had a manual adaptor that cost less, so bought that & then ended up switching to Nikon. Then once you start collecting lenses, you tend to stay with that brand.

Not sure why it lost it's way a bit, whether that was due to merger issues or if it just got out marketed by Nikon & Canon. Ricoh's a big company that have been big into printing & imaging though and the K3 looks like a nice camera.. And it's a LOT smaller than my Nikon beast :)

K-3 does wifi via a 16GB class 10 Flucard in slot 1 (if you need 'wifi').

Typical.. So.. err.. No built in HDMI!.. err, nope, it has that.. No Ethernet! :p

WiFi's handy in the studio for both workflow and keeping clients amused. So I can show live image on a big calibrated screen and they can decide if they're happy with it. Or with this-

keep them out of the studio and let them see what's going on from their office. Or just set a camera up outside and get squirrel shots using the remote control :)

That reminds me, I forgot their mini Q-series (mirrorless), which can use their full size lenses via an adapter... I like this one, Q10 attached to the 560mm http://i.i.cbsi.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim/2012/09/28/20120919_Pentax_Q10_telephoto_001.jpg and I suspect that Canon or Nikon have similar mini-cams and adapters.

So yeah, Pentax are once again becoming a viable alternative to the big boys, for people who want something "a little different" but still of high quality. They won't catch CaNikon in market share, though.

As I noted up thread, I use a canon EOS M with full size 15-85mm lens as my walk around camera. It's essentially a mirror less version of an EOS 650D and very nice the combination is too for landscapes and such. The Nikon 1 is I think the Nikon equivalent.

Hemingway isn't so much of an issue. Just take the card out.

Hdmi not Hemingway. Bloody auto word complete.
