Music is music regardless of whether it charts or not. Chart rankings and sales figures involve regurgitating statistics which doesn't make for interesting discussion, especially when it is supposed to 'prove' superiority of Artist A over Artist B. Great artists used to chart but don't now / chart occasionally / never chart / don't release singles etc. etc. -- it's not an exact science where the two can be separated.
There are people here who dig into music a bit deeper and are prepared to discuss it but sometimes it ends up as a battle of egos which can be just as childish as the scenario above. Some threads grow legs, many others are just purposeless and repetitive. The DS music forum doesn't really strike me as place to start deeper discussions of music as there is so much dross to filter through, bigging up the latest pop phenomenon or slating whomever is seen as in competition with them. It can be overpoweringly juvenile and bitchy - and that's down to the contributors, not the categories, or lack of them.

True, however, they are snobs if they constantly deride and mock others musical preferences.
