  The sim is just for data, not for phone calls.

  there is no 3G capability on Nexus 7. You can either connect to your phones hotspot or get a mifi router or connect to public hotspot.

  I'm pretty certain that there is a more expensive version of the Nexus 7 that does include 3G so that you can stay connected out and about . Check the Google play store .

  Although its quite a bit more expensive, I believe.
  
  Cheapest option is to use tour phone as a personal hot spot, as stated.
