This year's World championship on BBC2 begins on Monday with the Pairs final and the singles championship is already underway. It's a shame this great sport doesn't get much mention much these days but this year is the Commonwealth Games as well.

    One of my friends who was in his late 20s at the time surprised us all when he joined the bowls club just round the corner from his house. However the reason was he could get a reasonable pint for less than half what the pubs were charging.

    Then even more curiously he actually started playing, got rather good until a woman yakking on a mobile knocked him off his motorbike and he lost the use of his hand.
