Just how old is Sleep? Do you happen to know?

    Septuagenarian or octogenarian? :p

He's 74 Lorelei but don't let on I've told you he hates talking about his age. Odd little fact about Sleeper, did you know his burger van is an old converted 1934 Morris Minor GPO van that he's had since 1952?. It has those old stick out yellow blinking indicators and sleep wears a brown overall like Albert Arkwright in Open All Hours when he's serving up his hotdogs.

Great reply on YouTube, Lori. There is all kinds of weird stuff on there. And as for animal cruelty, I won't go near it.

I like it for the obscure songs I cannot get anywhere else, old commercials and programme clips I used to love and videos of my favourite male vocalist Tomas Ledin who is virtually unknown outside Scandinavia (but a multi millionaire nevertheless).

But I respect a person's right not to use or like it.

I have issues with it but I live and let live and I'm not going to have a bad opinion of others who use it but I do expect to be able to voice my opinion without being chastised, especially on a chatter thread.
You clearly have an open mind and a good attitude so we'll get along fine. :)

My daughter asked permission to use Youtube recently to view videos of cats doing funny things and she picked up a word in the comments section below. She asked me what this word meant and I was shocked.
This word meant having sex with dead animals.
The site is trolled by sickos.
I think a website showing content attractive to young children should be better monitored.
Kids are risking their lives to post stupid stunts on YT, hoping to get some fame or notoriety out of it and to get the most hits.
I just hate all that, it bugs me.

Thanks. You seem sensible and mature, unlike the idiots on the Showbiz and Music forums who are some of the most biased, blinkered idiots ever to exist.

My own niece posted a video on YouTube which consisted of herself and her friend on a playground swing and a lot of bad language. What sort of message is that sending out to the young?

And you are right, you do have the right to voice your opinion in a free Western world.

I know what you mean about the other threads.
I've almost given up posting on the rest of the board altogether because of the attitudes that prevail.
You are welcome to bring up any subject you like on this thread.
If you're stuck for something to post, you can always do what I do and take the piss out of the Sleeper. :D

Anorak time, guys. Does anyone remember a television commercial (British) for Cockburn's Port from, I think, 1969 which featured a bunch of Santas being tutored in pronunciation of the name? (One doesn't say 'cock', one says 'co') or the Babycham commercial from 1966 where the 'Bambi' pulling the sleigh ran off with a sleighfull of the stuff when Santa disappeared down the chimney?

I can't find them anywhere to download to RealPlayer.

A typical blinkered response from you, Andy.
You mean a truthful one LOR ..why can you not recognise a gift horse in the mouth when you see one ? .. If a relative had posted some long lost video of your relations, would you not look at them then ?

You seem to be incapable of looking at anything differently from the narrow way you see it.

What on earth was ' narrow' about that point of view .? Tell me one word of it that was false or inaccurate .

What about the fact that Youtube allows videos of animal abuse, violence, explicit content and displays the most disgusting, foul language including racism in the comments section for children to see.

What about them ? It has it's censorship and freedom issues , so what ? By your reasoning we should then ban the entire Hollywood film industry ( including your Marilyn Monroe films ) . Of course there will be foul language , of course there will be racist comments , of course children will see . Those horses have long since bolted LOR , the advent of the net years ago , the advent of video tape , the advent of porn in the 70s cinema ,the advent of laptops in children's bedrooms where they can watch porn ( passwords can easily be circumvented by any kid ) and porn pics being sent by kids to other kids in school .Teenagers having sex in school ..unimaginable in my day .. . Stop blaming Youtube for the cultural & moral cesspit we now live in LoR .. Animal cruelty ? Are you a vegetarian LoR ? I sure hope so , because if you're not and you eat meat , you are no different than those who post cruelty videos . What is more cruel , those who would torture an animal , those who filmed it ( usually the same person ) or YT for showing what has already happened ?. There are millions of videos on YT ( and the net overall ) It would take an army of censors watching every single one to monitor them, an impossible task . .By your reasoning then ,we should start at the very top of the destruction of family values ..the living room TV set , which has caused far more damage to the family ethic than YT ever did .It's done it for decades , is far more destructive , and is far more subtle ..but would you give up your big screen TV LOR , I doubt it !

And speaking of children, there are far too many videos of kids posted by people who should be more responsible and protect their children's privacy making it a draw for people with an unhealthy interest in children.

Agreed , that's an issue for their parents , not for Youtube . Perverts will always exist and always will , long before and after the net . If a child of mine uploaded nasty videos , then I would have failed as a parent to some degree ..Once again you're shooting the messenger Lor .

I'm concerned about things like this which is why I don't really use the site because I don't want to support it and I'm perfectly entitled to point out the negative aspects of Youtube without a nasty over-reaction from you.

There are negative aspects of everything in this world today Lorelie . The entire net and film industry for eg is a cesspit ..TV does far more damage . Youtube is just a flavour of everything that is wrong in this world .PCs in general have contributed to an entire generation who sit at home , never talk , and grow fat whilst staring at a screen watching trivia or playing games ..Youtube is not the sole contributor to that downward trend ,it's only a small part of a much greater malaise affecting all of society .

If you don't mind the downside of Youtube and want to use it regardless, that's your call but don't have a go at me cos I point out the truth about it and why I'm not a fan of it.

I'm not having a go at you , I am simply disagreeing with you Lor .( and you are far too sensitive by the way ) I think you are wrong in the sense that you think YT is completely evil and is solely responsible for the plummeting of standards in the western world , it isn't .It's a small part of a far greater problem which is encompassing the whole world at the moment as technology soars forward at frightening rates ...and until you equally condemn all other modern poisons ( ie; TV , mobile phones, video games , Hollywoood , etc etc etc ) then your argument has no credibility with me whatsoever LoR .

Peter likes Youtube but just look at the difference between his response to what I posted and yours.

He is who he is , I am who I am LoR .

Aiming a cyber spank my way is an all time low for you.
    You should apologise to me.
    I'm waiting.

Not this time girl ..If you have issues with YT censorship then fair enough , but why should I lose Judith Durham because some people are repugnant parents and some vile children post some vile things . ( I wanna ban rap music forever ..am I right ?) I can't be responsible for everyone on earth who uses the service . If you don't accept that way of thinking , then don't be a hypocrite Lor and sell your flat screen TV tomorrow ..

Accept another cyber spank to compliment the first one ..( and don't enjoy it ) :p:p:p:p:

( I've got all the quote thing wrong again .but I don't care ..:p:p:p:p)

    Andy, your logic is kaputt.
How am I a hypocrite for having a TV?
You're not comparing like with like.
Television has standards and rules of broadcasting which it must adhere to including a watershed which Youtube doesn't.
I watch limited quality programmes and classic films on telly and my kids don't watch TV at all.
We're all film fans in our house, sci-fi and fantasy mostly.
My son has been at the cinema twice this week and we tend to wait for the release of films we want to see on DVD and buy them for each other as gifts at Christmas and birthdays.
I will never subscribe to Sky, if they show a series that I want to see, I buy it on DVD so Youtube isn't going to provide me with anything that interests me that I can't get elsewhere and better.
I spend a lot of my spare time reading, expanding my mind, increasing my knowledge and actually using my brain rather than exposing myself to worthless, pointless, brain numbing trash on Youtube.
So much of the stuff people look at on there is just time wasting and they could be doing something more constructive with their lives but that's up to them.
All I've done is point out why I don't use or rate Youtube.
I'm in a minority, most people love it and use it frequently, I'm different.
I don't know why it has yanked your chain so much that I've slated YT, I seem to have really hit a nerve. I'm not trying to deprive you of Judith Durham so calm down sweetie.
Btw, if you feel the need to spank, go spank yourself or you could always pay a hooker to do it for you. :p

I have said I like YouTube, and I do like YouTube, I like it very much BUT what you have said, and what Lorelei have said is very true it should be monitored more thoroughly a lot more thoroughly. I am forever having to go through all my stuff on YouTube and clear the vile comments because I don't like them and don't want women and children having to see it when they visited my accounts, the worst of the offenders I ban from my account permanently I make sure they never get back to comment again.
Regarding the nasty content allowed to be on there, well I just find it disgusting and something should be done as soon as possible to remove it all. I know some people don't agree that the internet should be monitored but I do think it should be, I have nothing to hide or be ashamed of so it doesn't worry me, obviously private details like addresses, phone numbers, bank account numbers etc etc etc are important to keep totally private but all this filth and nasty stuff should be made illegal with prison the threat if anyone is still daft enough to try it.

The internet is still young in the big scheme of things, I am positive sometime in the near future restrictions will come in to clean it all up AND make it a lot safer.

Murray Walker, the former presenter of the Grand Prix on BBC, came from an advertising agency backround. He is often credited with writing the byline "A Mars, a day ... ". It's not true, Murray says he worked at the agency but did not write the line. I find it very interesting how some people get credited with stuff they had nothing to do with, a great example is "who played the saxophone on Baker Street ? ". For some reason many people think it was Bob Holness (the late presenter of Blockbusters) hmm.. talk about it's not what's true, it's what people believe. The actual answer to this day is disputed, the best I can provide is that it was a session player who played in the studio but Raphael Ravenscroft took credit for the recording. Whatever the actual answer is, to me that little piece of musical magic is the best hook ever in any song:cool:

    Thanks for that Peter.

I don't think I mentioned in my post about the Kray Twins that along with you I find the social history of gangsters and gangsterhood in London in the 50s and 60s very fascinating.

It has hardly ever been reflected accurately in TV dramas and documentaries but I would recommend you try and find The Long Firm, a drama series from the novel of the same name by Jake Arnottt, comprising four one hour episodes originally shown on BBC2 about 8 years ago. It has a central character, Harry Starkes played by Mark Strong, but each episode contains a separate story with the series being linked to Harry. There are many thingly disguised actual people from that era, including Lord Boothby, Barbara Windsor and Jack the Hat McVitie. The real McVitie was murdered by Reggie Kray but the BBC chose to give him a different demise. I'll say no more .. enjoy.

Btw, if you feel the need to spank, go spank yourself or you could always pay a hooker to do it for you. :p

Yes, your logic is kaput LoR . Firstly , you advocate censorship , which , in the internet world cannot be enforced anyway , but what bothers me is that you only advocate censorship on the medium that you disdain and disapprove of . What you have then is effectively 'selective censorship/ monitoring '. I won't have that LoR . TV does more harm that you tube ever did . Why can't you grasp that ? Think of the harm 25 years of Eastenders has done to families I ask you . What good can it possibly do for healthy families to see these kind of dysfunctional family scenarios played out night after night ? And what good can it possibly be for teenagers to see programmes that glorify spending 10 years in Ibiza for example , living lives of mild hedonism ,debauchery , drunkeness and casual whoring , not to mention destroying the culture of once idyllic islands ? Multiply that thousands of times , over 50 years , from the ' free lovin' of the sixties to Jeremy Kyle of today and the mass media has a lot to answer for ..but do you proclaim your same disgust at that ..no ..it's just YT and its ilk that's to blame . You're right of course , I'm not comparing like with like , that's because TV is far worse . Now until you have the courage of your convictions LOR , and that means condemning all forms of mass electronic ' entertainment ' then your particular singling out of YT carries no weight .
You say that TV has a watershed , true, and rules of conduct , true , but that applies only to the mainstream ( BBC ITV ) Have you looked at the rest lately LoR ..Channel four / five ..and that's before we even go near the mild porn stations ( babestation / adult X or whatever ) . I don't subscribe to sky either LoR , but I have these on freeview ...as should you . Will you be removing your TV at these outrages now LoR ..I don't think you will ..so in many ways you are supporting them complicitly .
I'm glad your kids don't watch TV , but they'll soon grow up and start to watch and want more ( for your information LoR , I rarely watch TV myself ) . You watch DvDs , do you also know of the massive entire industry dedicated to violent , horror , disturbing, porn filled DvDs too Lor ? It won't stop you buying the nice ones of course , but it's support by the back door .

We all try to expand our mind , and I do too . Youtube is just one resource I have to do that . I have learned an awful lot of great stuff I would simply have never known but without it , but I also realise I have a cost to pay . I know it will be misused , I know that people will have opposing views to mine on there ( you cannot imagine the arguments I have had on there for years )..volumes and volumes ..I swear to you . I have to realise there are opposing views in this world and I will have to deal with them where needed . Free speech has it's price and if I have the conviction to present my case , I may win with logic and debate . Simply ignoring it won't work , it just gives the wicked more freedom and leeway to do as they wish . There were bad boys in my school too LOR , in among the good ones who wanted to learn .. shall we close down the school and let them win ?

Incidentally , you haven't hit a nerve , I'm chortling as I write this ( as I did last night too ) but if you've heard me on the radio , and read my dribblings here, you'll know I like a good argument . I can't do luvey dovey forums and I love people who disagree with me and voice it too .I will never dislike them for it , but I will take them to task on it , and if I'm proved wrong I'll love it even more .

Just for your information though LoR ..I've never been drunk in my life , taken drugs in my life ,and never been with a hooker ..ever . I wouldn't know where to start .I'm actually a very good living bhoy . I adore music and quality hifi ..much of which I watch , listen and learn about on Youtube so put that in your pipe .

PS ..I won't send you a third cyber spank LoR ..because I've a sneaky suspicion you enjoyed the previous two .. even though you'll deny it ..:p:p:p:p

I remember the Babycham commercial Lamaestra was it really all that time back in 1966 when it went out?, blimey that is so long ago. I can't remember the other one in question at all, anyway why are you wanting to find them just out of interest?.
