Hello everyone,
Just wondering if anyone on DS has applied for a Games Maker role?
I applied and attended a selection event in March, got an email in May to say that although I had all the qualities they were after, Events Services was over-subscribed so they would get in touch in June.
Pretty much put everything on hold prior to that email and didn't apply for any more tickets than I had, didn't arrange any holidays in case of training days and had booked off the whole of the Olympics from work.
After being told I'm in a pool of 20,000+ applicants, I've found it quite hard to pass up on Olympic tickets because I think it's unlikely I will be offered a role now, and even if I were, I'm unsure how I will be able to fit in the training events bearing in mind there's only just over a month to go and I still don't know if I've been accepted.
I'm a bit disappointed, but I'm happy I have tickets so will still be involved in the Games.
Would love to hear other member's experiences of volunteering for the Games.

my selection event was last June and it wasn't till february that i found out i was successful, don't lose hope yet as i have heard they will offer positions until the end of June.
what events you going to see
i am very lucky to be part of a big group of gamesmakers on a FB page sharing experiences and keeping in touch with other gamesmakers.
if they do offer you a role at this late stage some of the training can be done online and venue training could even be done on your first shift

Yep, I know I might still be offered a role, but realistically I think it's pretty unlikely so I'm not putting stuff on hold on the off-chance like I was previously.
What will you be doing? Want this thread to be as much about Games Makers sharing their experiences as anything else
I got tickets for Athletics finals (category C seats), Rowing finals (B) and Canoe Slalom finals (A) - have been very successful via sites like CoSport, Event Team and Iceland Air - very excited now. Looking forward to seeing the torch, too!
I am in Event services as a team member at Wembley Stadium
so i will be showing people to seats etc
I have absolutely no idea what they expect non-Londoners to do about places to stay and getting to / from site each day when they left it so stupidly late to tell people when and where they would be working.
I was also put off by the failure of the gamesmaker team to confirm insurance for the gamesmakers when I asked, I'm freelance so I'm always very wary that half decent insurance must be in place when I give my services to some organisation, as if I'm out of action or damaged then I will lose a lot of money, so it's reasonable for me to check that SOME cover is in place. I need to know that if some other muppet drops a fire extinguisher on my foot or something, that I'll get looked after a bit better than just given a cup of orange juice and asked to grin and bear it
Heard from a guy who is managing a lot of the security training for the main venues that every time the gamesmaker lot send out a new batch of shifts a ton of people withdraw their applications so I imagine there's still a good chance of getting selected if you still want to be!
I must admit I initially applied as a GM as an insurance policy in case I didn't get tickets, then at least I would still somehow be involved in The Games. As it turns out, I did quite well ticket-wise, but since going for the interview I've realised I love the idea of being a GM.
Kind of reassured that obviously there's still a chance I could still be offered a role, although it definitely makes my life harder! I'm on the south coast so still don't know whether it's best to travel up every day or sort out a hotel. Also don't have any time to take for things like the Olympic Torch as I have the whole Olympic period off to allow for being a GM.

If any of you get stuck for accomodation, if you are on FB you can come and join a group of other gamesmakers all friends figure is currently at over 1200 people covering different roles and venues its a great page for support and advice etc and everybody is excited
it also has a link to a forum you can join with people offering gamesmakers affordable accomodation close to venues etc
its nice to see a few people who are gamesmakers on here it would be lovely to share experiences

Aww its nice that both you and DepartmentS are in the EVS role as well as me even though we are all at seperate venues

as for my training i had role specific training in March- couldn't fault it and thought it was very well organised
later this month i go back down to london to collect my uniform and theni have to go to a cinema in london to do orientation training. I am then going to a meet up with other gamesmakers. Then next month I am back down to london again for my venue specific training :eek:
It is all really getting closer now :eek: time is flying
Fortunately my interview was held in my region
travel on the day of shifts is paid for its just a shame its not subsidised before hand

I'm in London luckily, and the tubes run in time to get me to the early starts (6 15), hopefully they will still be running at 1am or it's the nightbus and I'm a bit too old for that.
Actually I've never been on a night bus sober:o, wonder what it's like.Last time I was on one I had a fight with a man who was handing out porn postcards.
i have heard tubes running till aboout 1:30-2am

The irony is that I have had to book an extra day off work and had to cancel some of the time I would/might have off should I get the role (also wanted to see the torch relay, so had to rebook that, too)
I'm at Horse Guards too.
Me too, although I'm happy to be as involved as I am - seeing a lot of events, will be watching the free ones like Triathlon, Marathon etc, watching the torch relay, seeing the technical rehearsal, so I'm still happy and lucky to have all that to look forward to
