How's it now doing now in a percentage term? Was the price far to high now we have hindsight? or was Vince right about the price being set needed to be a little lower to attract people at the time?

So we can look forward to another above inflation price hike in the cost of sending a letter.
Labour were in power for 13 years during which time the cost of sending a letter first class rose by 15p. Under the present government it has risen by 21p in less than 5 years.

We've picked up the tab for the Royal Mails pension pot.

And the price increases came in before privatisation.

so we did subsidise the royal mail prior to privatisation. Good to know. Are we doing now?

Kind of. We were very generous in giving them a lot of prime real estate which lead to stuff like this-

    http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/luxury-flats-at-site-of-mount-pleasant-sorting-office-given-green-light-by-boris-johnson-9772982.html

Martin Gafsen, Royal Mail Group Property Director, said: “I am delighted that the Mayor of London has given permission in principle for us to develop parts of our Mount Pleasant site in central London that are surplus to our operational requirements, This is a great opportunity for us to contribute to the regeneration of the area around our iconic mail centre building.

Which means profits from leasing those new luxury flats can be fed back into RM's services and means we can all enjoy cheaper prices and superior services..

    (yes, that is sarcasm)

Postal business Whistl - formerly TNT Post - has suspended its door-to-door delivery service in London, Liverpool and Manchester and is consulting 2,000 workers on redundancy.
The move follows a decision last month by potential investment partner LDC not to fund its expansion plans.
Whistl will continue to provide a service, but will revert back to using the Royal Mail for the "final mile".
Shares in Royal Mail rose 3.3% after the news was announced.

Trading at £4.97 at the close
