iPad Google Maps - download problems.

I read this morning that Google Maps includes a download facility, so that you can use maps offline. On googling, I found plenty of webpages telling you how to do it, but very few telling you how to use it.
Those that did tell you said something on the lines of "browse to the map", but when I'm offline (tested using Airplane (sic) mode) it tells me I can't browse in that mode.
If I eventually find it, it works well, and you can zoom in to increase the scale.
However, although the instructions say that, if an area's too big, you can cut it into chunks, it looks to me as though you can have only one area in the cache at a time.
Anyone else been using it?
