I always thought TVs had to be 1080p to be HD ready. When did 786p suddenly become acceptable?

There isn't, and never has been, any such thing as 768P.

However, HD Ready only requires a minimum resolution of 720 pixels, but almost all HD Ready sets are at least 768 pixels.

Notice neither i or P apply to the resolution of the set, they are broadcast standards, not TV standards.
