I know it is not available for other phones yet apart from the Nexus 5, but I have been having a look on you tube to get some idea what this new Android will be like.
All the videos will be based on the Nexus 5, but it will give me some idea what it would be like on my N4.
I like the look of the icons, they look better quality, but the lack of separation between the bottom icons and the main screen, seems a bit strange.
it also seems like google is trying to push more people to use google+ and hangouts, something I don't use, I don't like the look of the SMs combined with hangouts. i will have to have a good think about updating to Kitkat or staying as i am on my N4.

Google seem to be pushing G+ with everything now
Was reading an interesting article on KitKat earlier
http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/11/google-just-pulled-a-facebook-home-kitkats-primary-interface-is-google-search/
The main interface will be run via the Google Search app, are Google now logging everything that is done on the tablet?
I am sure I will upgrade when it's available
Google+ is a pain to be honest, again I been asked on you tube how i want to be known or have too different names and if you say you want too different names, it adds a google+ page to my You Tube channel. I stopped it happening again, but no doubt we will go through it all again in couple of weeks time.
I don't need a google+ profile and I have no intention of having one, fend or please. i don't use Google to search, even on my Nexus 4 phone. Google gets very little information from me for their adverts,, GPS, bluetooth and Wi-fi is normally switched off. Wi-fi is on at home and that is about it. google now is disabled and have been since i owned the phone.
I don't think i will bother to update to Kitkat, I should have realised this would be the way Google is going.
All i want is a phone that will allow me to stuff like the old browsing the net, maybe a peak at facebook, the old email, send and receive text and even make and receive phone calls without getting bullied into using stuff I don't want to use. Is that such a difficult thing to ask for?
This is the same old hyperbole and fluff that we've come to expect from you. Bullied into using? If you don't want a Google+ account, you don't need one. In fact, for all that you list in this paragraph, you don't even need a Google account. You could surf, use Facebook, email (assuming you don't use a GMail account given your anti-Google stance), text and call, all on an Android phone without even signing into a Google account. Hardly being "bullied"!
He really needs to stay away from technology period!! Should see some of the stuff he said about Chromebooks
Absolutely hysterical!!
You really don't need a smart phone, just use a basic phone and carry a camera for your photography hobby?
Have you tried using a Android based phone without a google account? i did, it was unusable to be honest.
I do use some Google features, ok I use two Google features. I use the calender as that is useful, easier to set it up on the computer than on the phone mind you.
I use the sync for contacts, which is the only thing I use Gmail for, I have never used Gmail for email, mainly because I got my own email provider.
Maybe not being bullied at the moment, but how long will it be before you will not even be able to get away from all of this stuff?
It is this wanting to know what you are doing that is the problem. I have already said that the idea of Chromebooks is good, a lightweight machine, with a proper keyboard and decent screen that is easy to use.
But when everything you do on it is scanned, then that is the problem.
I do need a smart phone, I just need one from a company that can be trusted, the problem is there is none.
Ubuntu have the right idea of a Linux phone, sadly Ubuntu is not much better than Google now.
I normally always got my camera on me anyway.
Anyway,, back to Kitkat, looks nice, but google trying to integrate SMS with Hangouts not a good idea. The way it is laid out looks horrid, saying that this lets make it look like a conversion in SMS is not good either.
I used to like it when SMS was separate and not bundled together.
It's not a good idea.
it is actually ****ing ridiculous. hangouts lists my google+ contacts. which are not people i know, or have ever met. above the people i know in real life.
huh? in short, no, they won't.
All that's happened is the launcher(main interface) has gone from being in one Google app to a different Google app. Mildly interesting if your a developer, but nothing else changes.
He has no Google account and does not need one but without one he cannoy use the Play store. He asked me why and I really don't know but I do think these new phones try to find out too much about you. Of course you can disable such features but then you cannot use most of the features. A simple option 'I don't have a Google account' in the menu would be nice even if it meant some features were not accessable. I have an HTC ONE and have a Google account but I don't understand circles, Hangouts or Google+ and to find messages that I have been added to 'circles' by people I have never heard of is confusing to say the least. Having YouTube linked in someway to all these Google items makes it even more confusing.
I am so glad I am not the only one to think so. i know you can put a third party SMS app on, but that is not the point.
I don't have google+, but they keep trying to get me on it, i even noticed i got a profile page, not a google+ page, but a profile page, i have no idea where that came from, nothing on it apart from my name. Can't find a way to get rid of it.
MS is no better, they linked my Ms account with Skype, i have already got a skype name, so i don't need or want my microsoft account linked with skype. But at least i can unlink it.
All this integration and companies wanting to put more and more of your info online is a bit worrying, it is fine if that is what you want, but when they do it behind your back it is a different thing.
I have a facebook page, but that is my choice, I choose to have a faceboook page and I chose what info to put on it. all I need google for is use my phone, before I had a Android based phone I never had a Google account.
I think the next time I am looking for a phone i will have to look at a different option. But that will be a few years yet.
For goodness sake. What does it matter?
Just because it links with another account does not mean you have to use it!! Just disable it and stop moaning. Or just don't sign in to the phone with any account. Just use it as a phone.
Or better yet, don't get any smartphone...
You need to drop this paranoia. I dont think you have any idea how silly you sound. What the hell is it you think they are doing with your email address which essentially is all they have? Stalk you?....
Do you think they have a huuuuuuge building with people inside rummaging through your data because you supplied an email address? What is it you think they are doing with it? Please explain.
As for the different option, they all do it. To use an iphone you must have an apple ID which collects info. BB are the same. Windows phones do it as well.
i tried for a day and gave up. i' now using a 3rd party app.
a small issue i didn't like about hangouts, in addition to the many many large issues was that the keyboard had no carriage return.
Up to press i prefer 4.3 and if i am being honest my Nexus 4
yes probably but nobody knows when.
it's not even on the nexus devices yet. think months rather than weeks.
Mine is fine now i removed the contacts i dont know. Took 10 seconds!
Why do uou need a Google account for Android (or an iTunes account for Apple and what ever Microsoft call there account for Windows Phone)? Because that is the way smartphones work. You can't buy things from the various app stores without an account as how would they know who was buying it (it applies to free stuff as well). They all offer backups for things like your contacts. Again this needs an account to work or how would they know who the contacts belong to.
Your single google account can identify you accross all of Google's services. I can't see what is confusing about that. You can even use things like YouTube without logging in,
Although there is a huge marketing benefit to Google by having all this information ( they do need to actually make money ), I find having all the important info on my phone, essentially contacts and photos synced to a cloud service one of the main benefits of having a smart phone.
I've had a phone stolen before before all this type of technology and what a pain to lose all your contacts
I set up my new Nexus 5 yesterday and with no hassle I've got all my photos and contacts on my new phone with zero effort. I even had it re-sync the apps I had on the previous phone.
In the old days it was a major mission getting a new phone and setting up your list of contacts.
Not going to upgrade until (a) it is available on the Nx4, and (b) I am sure that this new messenger hub can do what I need it to.
what do you need it to do, other than send and receive messages?
yep, I imagine that the Kindle Fire tablets all use Android fine without the use of a Google account.....you don't have to use the Play Store for apps after all. Plenty of alternatives available.
