I love Taggart, but what is stopping STV to just go it alone and continue the series independently..........surely they don't need the financial backing of their English counterparts for everything do they?

I agree, and if the independent production was doing very badly they could ask the English broadcasters to bail them out, just like some Irish broadcasters did.:)
Sadly I think the programme has followed the decline in quality of the subsequent versions of the covers used instead of that recording.
The personal problems of the characters have become boring and the loss of Stewart with no one to replace him, probably as a cost saving exercise has further diminished the quality.
I'm only surprised that it has survived for so long since Mark McManus's death.

supposedly, that is what stv plan on doing.it has strong oversea's sales so hopefully it will continue.could this be itv getting their own back for stv dropping lots of networked shows?
Yep, it did look like the writing was on the wall, and I agree it had declined in recent years, but it was one of probably only three drama shows that I still tune into on ITV.
It's a shame they've axed it.

It did decline with ITV showing random epsiodes but they did show the last lot as a series though. Also the switch from 90 to 60min at ITV's insistance did it no favours.
I do hope that it continues and we can still get to see it on another channel , its not that it is not popular but that ITV seems to be axing all continuing drama series in favour of one off series either as a two hour show or mini series style. By the looks of it it will just be Midsomer and Downton Abbey as returning dramas as there is talk of axing Lewis if they take up the Morse early years drama, all the other returning drama series have gone.
I noticed this week that ITV is not showing one drama between Mon and Sat nights.
I agree with skp20040 that it was reducing it to an hour that has ruined it, there was just too much story to cram into 1 hour
I agree. The early McManus series were actually spread over two weeks - story lines were very intricate. ITV just don't want it because of their fight with STV.
But since Taggart is sold all over the world (yes, I've watched in Turkey with dubbed speech!) I'm surprised STV can't afford to keep it going.
Taggart has only been dropped by ITV. STV has no plans to drop it and are confident of it's future. The show is very popular worldwide and is currently being seen on 3 channels in Australia. The show makes huge profits for STV and the last series got good ratings in Scotland when it was aired.
John Michie is currently working on Corrie but his story on the show will be spread out over a year his actual time working on the show is a lot less. If however he is offered more time and excepts to stay on then Taggart will still continue without him after all it did without Neil Duncan and James Macpherson.
STV got everything it wanted out of this new deal with ITV.
To buy programmes independently and pay only for what they use.
To get greater control of their schedule and to buy in from other sources.
The opportunity to refuse drama and sporting events in favour of other programming or local content.
ITV to work closer with STV on an equal basis.
ITV also got what they wanted
A settlement from STV (an offer STV first made 2 years ago)
STV to buy in more drama
Hopefully both ITV and STV will now have a better relationship and the viewers will see the benefits. The new management at ITV do seem to generally want a good relationship with STV and found a discrepency in ITV's claims and came to an agreement that benefits all and hopefully both companies can put this bad blood behind them and look to the future. A new drama made by STV and ITV called Fast Freddie, the Widow & Me, a 90-minute drama written by Christopher Dunlop to be showed at Christmas.
A shame but the modern ITV is all about ratings. They have improved a bit over the last few years, but they still continue to waste millions on rubbish like Sing If You Can and Paul O Grady. Taggart only dipped in quality because ITV wanted it condensed into an hour and they had a petty feud with STV. In years to come people will still watch the old Taggarts, but who will remember any of their reality nonsense in 20 years time.
Taggart supposedly more than pays for itself due to overseas sales. No reason STV can't continue to make it for STV viewers only. If they do, I hope they return to the longer format with twists and turns. The more recent hour long versions have lacked this. Was the reason the episode length was cut down to 1 hour anything to do with central ITV?

Maybe that was another reason it was axed.
Since then it's been muuuurdah!
i like it!
Coronation Street - running the Rovers Return with his wife 'Cindy Beale' (as was).
From the moment that was announced a few weeks ago it was pretty obvious that Taggart was dead.
It's a shame they've axed it.

Maybe the story writer has just run put of ideas
