Windows Defender
My new pc arrived with a 1 month "free" installation of McAfee installed on it. I've never been a fan of McAfee and for that matter neither has my wife who went through months of problems on her work pc with it.
I don't intend to carry on with McAfee so will Defender be a suitable replacement?
As Windows Defender is apparently installed on my pc but has been inactivated it might be the easiest option but will it be the best?
Has anyone got any views on this?
Thanks

It's certainly not the best, but then neither is McAfee.
In 8.1 it's fine for most users. If used with the best AV out there (Common sense) it covers most of the bases...
A good paid for or free program backed up by a weekly scan with the free version of Malwarebytes Antimalware program should give you more than adequate protection. Howver, don't forget that NO program, free or paid can give you a guarantee that your PC will never become infected. Viruses and malware evolve quickly so the programs to fight them are constantly playing catch up. If you and your family members are generally safe surfers and are not in the habit of visiting dodgy sites, downloading dodgy software from bittorrent sites etc you lessen the risk. If you are not then you might consider surfing within a sandboxed environment. A google search will give you programs like Sandboxie or if Avast is installed a sandbox element is included, as it is also with Kaspersky's and Bitdefender's Internet Suites.
Hope this helps.
BIB Nobody who knows anything about Windows 8 would do that.
Not because there's anything wrong with MSE per se, but because they would know that Windows Defender on Windows 8 is the successor to MSE, and comes pre-installed.
I don't use it personally on my desktop, but it's on the other machines in the house and is protecting them even when surfing in some fairly murky waters....;) It would be wrong to totally dismiss it for everyday normal use....IMO..:)
I've been running MSE/Defender on my Windows 7/8 PCs for years, and I've seen one infection - via an ad.
Well, I've been using Avast on Windows XP/7/8 PCs for years and not seen a single infection
Removing McAfee or Norton can sometimes improve the speed at which a computer runs.
I've been looking at possible replacements for McAfee in conjunction with the advice posted here.
I think I would be satisfied with a free product as it's unlikely the pc will be visiting any dodgy sites. I know it's not that simple but as far as I know on my last pc using Avast it seemed to do a pretty good job and looking at at some of the reviews it came out pretty well. I did become concerned in recent times that it was slowing everything down though, perhaps my rather old pc had something to do with that.
I've still got a few days left of my free McAfee subscription so if anyone else has more to add I will keep looking here.
Thanks for all your contributions.
