Grand Theft Auto IV Things to do
With all the excitement about GTA V i thought i might give GTA IV another try.
I had this game on release day as i loved San Andreas and honestly could not wait to get into it but found the character and storyline very boring and the lack of gangs / customisation and things to do ultimatley meant it has been untouched for years.
So i was bored on Saturday night ( X Factor was on) and thought i would give it another go, to be honest i only lasted about 15 mins before the horrible driving and slow running made me turn it off again.
Can i have some suggestions of good things to do on it? My favourite things on San Andreas / Saints Row is gang wars.

Turn the sound off so you cant hear Nikos cousin going on about big fat titties.
I got the game on release date so it's along time ago but I remember not liking the driving at first. I didn't like the camera going around corners. But I got into the habbit of slightly turning the camera and I ended up loving it.
Is the online server still active with users? If so give that a go. I went through a phase of playing nothing but GTA IV online. The idea I was speeding around in a car with other real people in there hunting the other team down was awesome.
Im fact the only reason I stopped was I got into first person shooters, and after playing Modern Warfare online I don't like the slow and awkward movement in GTA. But that's probably just me.
Well, if you need to ask and everything....
I can't believe you found the driving horrible, it was such a big improvement over the earlier games.
I admit, I found the story crappy too, but the online free mode could keep mr busy for hours
I'd either join a game with friendly fire off and hordecweapons to take on the police with others or join a game with friendly fire on, horde weapons, then kill anyone stupud enough to attack me
I also got quite efficient at grenade drive-bys and also snopong people from boats or rooftops. There is also a huge boat that sometimes spawns. We used to get a bunch of people in that, maybe escort it with a couple of speedboats, then drive it to the airport where everyone goes to find the helicopters (which are really annoying), and then open fire
I remember one time, a bunch of annoying kids shouting over their mics took over the high rise mansion thing you get on the second island. I flrw to an even higher rooftop across the road and started sniping them one by one. It is pretty funny online on free mode sometimes, but yeah the story is pants
I did actually manage to get to 'Do you have protection' before i give up on it
I tried to get some opinions on here as i was in the GTA5 thread but ye i should probably just google it
where did people get only 2 missions from
Free mode on multiplayer is always very busy and there's also people modding in there, so it's a huge amount of fun running around the airport in a drivable dinosaur off ramps and with vast amount of cool spawning.
1. The slow running is bad coding on Rockstars part, you need far more memory than you should to run it properly. You can turn settings down to make it playable, and lets face it there are only so many shades of grey (50)
2. The driving sucks big style on PC due to the camera. If I turn, I want to the camera to turn with me. It doesn't. The only way to fix this I found was to use a wired XboX Controller which then makes it act like previous GTA's.
In all honesty I would love to fully finish GTAIV but my save got corrupted at about 80% through the story, I'm a 100% sorta person and the game is just far too dreary to contemplate. Few things I dislike about this game:
1. The character and story - Nico isn't likeable, his story isn't entertaining and gets bloated out far longer than it needs to be.
2. The city - Too big, too samey, too grey. Every island looks exactly like the others.
3. The missions - Drive, shoot, drive, shoot, drive, shoot ad nauseum with most of the drives being far too long. Not one memorable mission.
4. The music - Only 2 radio stations which are actually listenable too, the rest being far too niche for the majority of tastes. The extra episodes rectfied this slightly, but the bulk of the game doesn't add the new stations/tracks in!?!?!
5. Lack of fun - Collecting packages was boring but it got us guns. Why do we want to kill pidgeons for no reward? and how do we get guns easily? How about clothes? It was fun dressing CJ in various styles, Nico got very little choice in what to wear. For me the main reason to play GTA is fun, GTAIV seemed to want to be a gritty real life story, which just didn't work. On the flip side Saints Row 2 offered me far greater fun, sure it wasn't remotely real but who the hell cares? San Andreas is widely heralded as the best in the series and are we really supposed to believe CJ could steal a jet pack? or become a record producer with no experience? We played and lauded with priase San Andreas because it was fun.
I guessed 2 missions because you said you only played for 15 minutes
i only played it 15 mins on saturday, when i first had the game i honestly think i give it a proper go, it felt like a struggle to play it though to be honest
I am playing on the 360, but all of the bold i agree with.
Especially about SR2 it is such a underrated game, i think it is brilliant! so much action always a gang to have a fight with loads of customisation / things to buy, cool vehicles cool missions its everything GTA IV should have been.
But i think SR3 jumped the shark a bit, to be honest i found it a let down, it just went to mental
At the end of the day if a game works, then don't change it!
GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas are all pretty much the same game. Sure there are little tweaks here and there (climbing, swimming, gangs, clothes etc.) but all added to the game, none were drastic, or required. Basically all I wanted from GTAIV was a GTA3 2 but instead got a gritty crime story which just didn't feel like what I'd come to expect from a GTA game.
Like you said Saints Row 3 took the zanyness of Saints Row 2 and took it far too far to the extreme. All SR3 had to do was have the Saints take over a new city with 3 different gangs, a different story and some new mini games and it would have been brilliant.
Same with Duke Nukem Forever, if it had been Duke Nukem 3D 2, then it would have been lauded. Instead it changed the basics and got panned.
There is a reason why millions of people buy the latest WWE/FIFA/ProEvo title, it's more of what they love. All Rockstar has to do to make a GTA game like Vice City or San Andreas but with modern graphics and it will be a winner. They've not visited the 60's or the 70's in the 3D era, they've not visited the 80's in almost 10 years, and the 90's in almost 8. Plenty of scope for more of what they do best, fun filled era based titles.
Ye totally agree with you here, its as of they wanted GTA to be taken more serious when i have been playing GTA all these years to have fun and thats it, really hope the new one will be back to its best.
I really like how SR2 done the gang element, where you could pick up a load of members to help you take on the other gangs.
I spent loads of time just messing around on that game before completing it
I really wanted SR3 to be like you said, just have the saints taking on new ground / gangs and just updated the graphics add in new gangs, new storylines etc but instead of that they just spoilt it by going so over the top.
I rushed to finish SR2 in time for Mists of Pandaria so didn't 100% complete it but did all the gang/story missions and enjoyed them all. Unlike GTAIV the missons were mostly memorable and fun. I've had a little go on SR3 but don't own it, I will get the Full Package from a Steam sale to play once I'm bored with WoW again.
i picked up SR3 for under £20 in the Amazon sales last Christmas time so a good deal as it hadnt long been released but found it a bit to crazy but i think i may give it another try
Agree with SR3 jumping the shark btw, felt like a game designed by a commitee of 13 year old boys
Oh God I forgot about the safehouses. Far too spread out and few offered anything more than a save point.
Someone also mentioned the phone. Very very annoying.
yeah it was just cumbersome. the phone was actually ridiculous, I ended up looking for mods to see if anyone worked out a way to take it out! In fact I looked for a few mods on this game for the PC.
The repetitive stuff just didnt work, dating, bowling, darts again and again wating was something to happen, its a bad mechanic. They should take a leaf out of Bethedsa's book, they designed repetitive stuff to be fun because they knew it would be a large part of the gameplay. It was like GTA4 was designed to irritate the player.

I could be wrong I was young, but I don't remember a particular strong story line.
Some fun missions though, I remember trying to do the "speed" copy over and over. Keep the bus at a certain speed or it will blow.
