UK weekend break

Any ideas for a good weekend break for the weekend of the 16th? No more than three hours by train from London. And a reasonable price - I was looking at Liverpool but the hotel rates are outrageous. I am not fussed if city, stately home, etc - just want a weekend away with a few friends!

Go glamping? Rent a yurt? Or Brighton would be nice? There's also Southend. City wise Nottingham is great and cheap - good for shopping, Sheffield is a banging night out.

York is very nice. Hertiage sites, good walks around the city walls, river boat trip if you can bare the cold and good shops. Can't really advise on nightlife, although there was the usual pubs & clubs.

Places in Dorset also very nice, although bad weather might limit what you can do daytime. Bournemouth has lively nightlife.

    York

    Durham

    Chester

Went to Chester last February for two days and one night and was bowled over by how beautiful it is. Not sure how easy it is to get to by train but it's well worth a visit. The zoo is a day out in itself.

I've done breaks in Bath, Norwich and Oxford. All nice places for a quick break.

I would say Brighton or somewhere in Dorset.

I may be slightly biased, but Oxford is gorgeous. It's term time as well so colleges will be busy with students rather than empty apart from tourists, so it'll actually have the real student atmosphere. And it's only an hour on the train from London :)
