Borderlands 2. Advice required.
Been playing BL2 for a few days now.
So far it's all been pretty straightforward. Some bits have been challenging but nothing's been insanely hard.
I've been doing a few of the side-quests but haven't been completeing them religiously.
Anyway, I'm currently a level 22 Gunner (with a personal preference for sniping) and I've just got to the story mission where you're supposed to invade Angel's mainframe and steal the vault key.
And I'm just getting absolutely creamed.
I've done several missions involving Constructors and I know they're quite tough but not ridiculously so.
During the vault key mission, however, I just seem to run up the hill, the constructor launches a volley of missiles and I wind up dead, sometimes even before getting close enough to actually SEE the damned thing.
I don't seem to be able to survive long enough to scout the area to see if there's any available cover.
Basically, I get to the top of the hill, the constructor launches missiles, I cower behind some crates or summat, I lose a lot of health and then, as soon as I try to move, I get sliced up by it's laser or more missiles.
I've tried deploying a sentry gun to act as a decoy and it usually does a bit of damage before being destroyed but then the Constructor just turns it's attention back to me and finishes me off.
Am I missing something or do I just need to give up and farm a bunch of side-quests in order to level-up before having another crack at this?
Is there somewhere I can use for cover while fighting with the Constructor or should I be doing something like running up the hill, dumping the sentry gun and running away again until I can deploy another sentry gun?

In the mission menu, what difficulty does it say for this mission? If it says 'tough' then just do some side quests like you said. Levelling up just one level makes a difference.
You should aim to finish the first playthrough at level 30-35.

If you actually get around to posting some advice I'd be happy to consider it.
As I said, at some great length, at the moment I just seem to be getting ripped a new arsehole pretty-much as soon as I spawn.
TBH, I fear I might have spent too many skill-points on my sentry gun.
When I played Borderlands I didn't even realise I had the SG available so this time I've decided to make quite a bit of use of it so I've fully upgraded it.
I know I can re-juggle my skill points around but rather than doing that I'll probably just farm a few side-quests.
Any constructive advice for people like me , would be appriciated. Also how to restore health..I did find a health store on the last mission(escorting that stupid robot..near start of the game), but then lost it all again trying to fight my way back to the objective. I did find some health pickups when I started the game..but after that , I cant seem to find any. Im now level 6 and the mission Im on says level five..but I still die all the time.
I have no side missions available either...Ive done all the average ones at my level.
Thanks in advance.
Do as many of the side-quests as you can manage without falling asleep and pay a lot of attention to the different characteristics of all the various guns and power-ups etc.
Pay particular attention to guns that offer elemental damage and try to mix & match them.
For example, get an assault rifle that causes shock damage to weaken shields and a sniper rifle that causes corrosive damage to people and then use one then swap to the other during fights.
Also never underestimate the power of running away.
Enemies seem to have areas that they stick to by default.
harass enemies until your health gets low and then run away, then turn around and watch as they begin to turn around and ignore you, shoot at one particular baddie and lure him toward you then finish him off, move forward again and repeat.
As somebody already said, the game DOES seem to have some big spikes in difficulty.
Just cos you're finding a particular thing hard it doesn't mean you're entirely out of your league.
It may just be that you're just not kitted-out for that particular task so try it with different guns.
I found, for example, that I struggled with a lot of the Hyperion robots until I realised that a couple of shots from a fancy corrosive shotgun I found could finish them off easily.
Oh, another top-tip: If you're struggling with the Hyperion robots, use a sniper rifle, aim at their shoulder joints and shoot their arms off.
That'll, at least, get rid of the weapons built into their arms.
Beyond that, honestly I haven't really found that there's a lot to it.
Use cover whenever possible.
Use vehicles as much as possible.
Shoot people from as far away as possible.
Run away when necessary.
Course, as the fact I started this thread suggests, I'm no expert.
Hotelier: you can buy health top ups from Dr Zed's medical vending machines. Other than that you can only loot them from bodies or containers.
I had a really hard time killing Dr Mercy, he must have killed me 10 times at least. Then I did it on another character in one go. Sometimes you just get really unlucky with loot drops. Always check the vending machines for gun and shield upgrades, and when you get to Sanctuary try your luck on the fruit machines.
Can you go onto the DLC then and get up to level 50? Also, having your sentry gun firing rockets makes a hell of a difference!:D
The game requires you to have sufficiently risen to certain levels to be able to match later missions, and the only way to do that is to do the so-called side-missions. The game missions simply unlock more missions, that's their only difference from the side-missions.

Do people not read reviews or watch youtube clips before buying a game?
I managed to get up the hill and reached the part where you're fighting BNK-3R and there's been a whole bunch of weapons lying around that I can't even use cos it says they're for level 25 and upwards players.
Thing is, the game has to take some of the responsibility for this.
I mean, if you need to be at a higher level to have a fair chance at certain missions, why make all the parts leading up to that mission so easy that you can complete them easily without being anywhere near the required level?
Also, the way the missions are handed out is a bit flawed too.
I mean, you rescue Roland, he asks you to do something else, you do it, you turn in and the next mission also comes from Roland too so you accept that one too, and so on.
Surely if the game wanted you to potter around, levelling up, it'd make more sense for the campaign missions to be issued by a more diverse bunch of characters so the player would be encouraged to travel around the game-world and discover various side-quests for themselves?
I'll have to trundle around levelling up before I have a crack at BNK-3R but I'm not looking forward to that.
Not really keen on boss-fights that just go on for hours, with a boss that simply soaks up a huge amount of damage.
Seems like a rather "lazy" way to make a game challenging.
*EDIT*
Oh, meant to say, I think the game managed to screw me over a bit before.
Seems I was running around and triggered one of the auto-save terminals near the Badass Constructor I was fighting so, as soon as I started to spawn, it'd just launch a bunch of missiles at me and I'd be dead again.
In the end I managed to run right back down the hill, travel to a different area and then travel back again so the game switched me to a spawn point further away from the Constructor again.
After that was sorted out it wasn't that hard to defeat the 2 Constructors and reach BNK-3R.
Oh, I don't mind doing side-quests as long as they're interesting.
Doing stuff like going around shooting X amout of a certain creature or collecting Y amounts of a specific item is a bit dull though.
But it's a sandbox game, there are not meant to be any forced paths. It's entirely up to you where you go and what you do, how you play it and in what order.
Actually I think BL2 lays it out on a plate too much. In BL1 it didn't tell you what were and were not 'game missions', you just had to do them all to find out. I think that was a better approach.
But by doing it this way it does give the itchy trigger-fingered non-tactical players, who for reasons known only to themselves, actually like to face overwhelming forces and endlessly struggle their way through them. Personally I think they're melon heads and are missing the whole point of the exercise, but like I said, it's a sandbox game, they're free to do as they please and if that's what they want to do then let the mad bastards have at it.
I think also some of these discrepancies come about because the game is trying to be all things to all men and has to cope with collectives as well as single players. You only have to watch some of The Creatures YouTube walkthrough to see the game-changing difference having four loons running around totally gung-ho makes compared to the much more circumspect and tactical approach an individual has to take. At least if they wish to succeed with all their hair intact.

And if that was the case you might have a point which I could agree with.
As it is, what you have is a game which had caused me no problems at all at level 22 but then which suddenly requires that I'm level 25 or greater to do a particular part.
That seems to suggest there's something amiss besides the players lack of clairvoyance with regard to knowing how difficult a particular mission might prove to be.
Now you either like that kind of thing or you don't, but you can't really blame the game for what is a fundamental part of the design.
