I have never owned a dog but when I think of cats I always think of the typical names but I have never once thought of calling a cat or a deg etc a name like Trevor or Jason. Why is that? Why do we insist on giving animals sometimes very silly names? My hamster is called Matty, I didn't call him that my parents did and I like it but calling him Matthew? I just couldn't do it!
I often wonder what cats and dogs etc think of their own names... maybe that is why they ignore us when we call them?
Human: tinkles!
Cat: huh?
Human: come here tinkles!
Cat: is he talking to me?
Human: come on! dinner is ready!
Cat: dinner? smashing, but who is tinkles and why is my pet calling his name?
There was a Blue Peter cat called Jason, he was a Siamese.
I like human names for pets too, I had a fish called Simon as a kid.
Someone I used to work with had a rabbit called Kevin!
I'll always remember my dad's story about dog names.
He was in the park one day with me when I was a little bubba and he heard a man calling "Joan! Joan! Joan come here". My dad turned around, expecting the man to be calling his daughter/wife/sister/friend over. But no. He was calling his german shep!!
A german shepard. Called Joan. Cracks me up everytime!!
My Geoff is a Siamese (the name brings him down a peg or 2)
My next door neighbour is called Geoff so that was probably a no no when we got our two kittens but my son desperately wanted to call our boy "Ian". We settled for Smudge in the end....

Hahahaaa love it!
I agree, somehow people names are fine for dogs (Benji etc..) but not cats.. it's weird isn't it?
Where we used to live my next door neighbours had a little dog called Ross.
When the girl 5 doors down had her baby boy I went to see them. I asked what the little one's name was and was told Ross. I had a hard time stopping my mouth from saying "what a lovely name, that what next door call their dog".
I also had a budgie called Peter when I was younger!
Then there was the hamster called Rodney.
I had 2 cats, Poppy and Lily. One day we were sitting in a pub garden having lunch and there was a family at the next table, mum, dad, and twin girls (about 18 months old) We got chatting and it turned out their names were Poppy and Lily. I had to give my daughter a swift kick under the table as she was about to announce that's what our cats were called.
When I was a young'un we had a cat called Timothy William. My first cat (was mine as opposed to the family's) was called Indiana but she was a she. Current cat is called Jingo, but my other half calls her Ming the Merciless or Morbo (Futurama alien monster).
We have 3 horses, but only one has a human name- Betsy. All the family dogs have had human names, Polly, Jenny, Jilly and Monty.
My sister called her cat Emily, which I thought was a bit odd.
I think "human names" for pets are OK if they have a bit of character about them - like Albert, Arthur and Benji which could suit your pets pretty good. However I went to school with a girl who called her cat "Karen". That's just.... huh?
No offense to people called Karen, but for a cat!
My dogs called Freeman. I don't know any other dogs with that name. He had been tied up in someones back garden + relly badly neglected. When we got him i said don't worry your a free man now + he jumped all over me liking my face off so we went with Freeman.
