The Ebola outbreak in West Africa, described yesterday by the Foreign Secretary as a threat to the UK, could catch UK Border staff unprepared, a union official has said.

    My favourite para...
"There is no health facility at the border, there is no containment facility, and until extremely recently there has been no guidance issued to staff at all as to what they should do," She told the BBC Radio 4's The World Tonight. "They are phoning us up and asking 'what are we supposed to do, how do we spot this, how do we protect ourselves?', and we can't answer that for them just now."

Um... how about referring them to the guidance that you've just mentioned?

Why not just stop all flights to or from any country where there is an outbreak, until there are no new cases?

Can't do that, there will be countless lefties and liberals jumping up and down claiming racism, discrimination and unjust treatment if that were to happen, even though it would reduce the risk of an epidemic in the UK.

If you wait until someone gets to the UK border before checking people then you are too late. Any containment needs to be done at the source of the outbreak.

And all the countries to which people who have been to a country where an outbreak has occurred have been, and all the countries to which the people from those countries have been?

People could be arriving from various parts of the globe carrying all kinds of diseases. How prepared are our border staff to deal with any of them?

The incubation period for ebola is anything from 48hours to 3 weeks so short of banning any travel into this country for anyone who has passed through an infected region within the past month (not sure how they'd police that mind you) I'm at a loss as to what anyone thinks they can do other than cross their fingers and play the odds.

There never have been the facilities at border controls the union official mentions and I'd be amazed if any country in the world has such facilities. Sounds like union uses health scare for own ends.

Not surpised there's no quarantine procedures in place. However there are places that do have procedures in place for years, just look at Hong Kong.

They're not medical experts so where are the port doctors and the quarantine areas?

Ahh Liberal Idiocy at it's finest !

If Cameron had the balls he'd demand all airlines to terminate any flights to the infected countries.

They're not supposed to be medical experts. Their mistake is ringing up a spectacularly clueless Union official who on the one hand tells them tells them she doesn't know what they should do while on the other hand advising us that guidance has been issued as to what they should do (albeit "extremely recently").

As the UK is a much more cleaner nation, with wash facilities for hands and so on, if it did arrive in the UK, it wouldn't spread as much as it has in the affected countries. This was noted this morning on Sky News.

Yes, which inevitably turns out to be the more idiotic right-wingers not thinking before they post. Stoatie already posted why that solution wouldn't work. The real danger would be illegal immigrants coming into the country hidden in crowded conditions. Lovely incubator for all types of diseases. At least on a scheduled flight there's a good chance of someone, including the person who ain't feeling great, raising the alarm. Much more unlikely for illegal immigrants and their smugglers to do that.

As far as I know contagion is from body fluids, eg sneezing, kissing, sex.

But what about the millions of people who will have been too, or past though these countries but are back in their own country or no longer in the counties that have been infected, so stopping flights from these counties is not going to make alot of differance

Funny that was the first thing that occurred to me.

Actually the Nigerians have heat scanners at airports, ports and land borders. The Minister seemed to have it covered. Meanwhile back in the UK the border staff are saying, 'what precautions'?

Most illegal immigrants arrive here legally via direct plane route from their own countries then don't leave.

The ones at Calais have probably spent months travelling, which as it can take up to three weeks for symptoms to appear after infection, would mean they have already been quarantined.

The first duty of any government is to protect the citizens living within its borders, we all require assurances we are being properly and fully protected from this threat.

Well at least they are being honest about it, and heat scanners only help when you are showing the fever, you can carry the virus for 3 weeks without out showing any symptoms

And I'd rather trust the authorities and experts rather than self-appointed know-it-alls on the internet.

Banning flights from the area is question might be an option but we can't really able to stop all flights from Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Paris which may have connecting passengers on them.

The Nigerians also banned the airline that brought the only Ebola case to Nigeria from flying there again, I just heard on Sky news.

Never happen in the UK, can't imagine Cameron giving the order to ban airlines until the outbreak is over. As usual it's only the British liberals that worry about offending people, everyone else just does what is best for their country.

Yes, but have you considered that talk about closing air routes could in fact cause precisely the problem I was talking about? People would still want to be smuggled, even more so if this outbreak started spreading, and there's always someone reckless enough (the banker sort) to make money assuming they won't end up a victim of the harm they could cause.

Chances of the government closing travel and trade routes to the affected areas aren't likely because the WHO have stated they don't think there needs to be any restrictions.

It's funny how 2 months ago, I was talking about heat scanners but everyone thought they weren't necessary. Now the border control are all panicking cause they don't have anything in place. The thread is here if anyone wants to look-

Fair enough it sometimes takes up to 3 weeks for symptoms to show. However, you are able to detect people with the heat scanner, who already have a fever and to check if they have a virus with a doctor.
