Liverpool for the experience of an Anfield European night.
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play, and could he play!
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
ABout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road
Neither, just mediocre doss holes , laden with inane shopping centres, noddy falts & the real gems of the industrial revolution hidden by a deluge of concrete & glass sheds that pass themselves off as modern architecture.
Once proud & industrious places turned into wall to wall shopping emporiums. Just towering temples to the great god that is consumerism. People just wandering round in ever decreasing circles , buying things to beat the boredom & being poisened in the process by all the diesel fumes. The pollution, stench & general sqaulor of it all is best avoided. Manchester city centre is the equivalent of smoking 30 ciggarettes a day.
The disparity in the city is profound. The vandalism of Piccadilly Gardens , the lackluster tat designed by Ian Simpson & the wrecking of the corn exchange in Manchester have been unforgivable. At least a bit of the old Arndales charms still survive , the bog walling hasnt dissappeared just yet, a reminder that no amount of cladding can hide what is one of the biggest disasters to hit Manchester.
As many of us have found , its just best to visit Manchester for work purposes, take the money & retreat out of the way by the sea.
Manchester for me. I loved it so much I ended up moving here.
Liverpool isn't bad but with Manchester being practically the second city (shut up Brummies ) there's more to do and more on offer.
Plus, Liverpool has a strange atmosphere during the day. It's very quiet in the centre for some reason.
I agree. Manchester is an amazing place. It's Britain's Barcelona.
Liverpool is a great city, and has some beautiful architecture, but it's let down by it's refusal to take any criticism, it's obsession with mourning, and our "we don't talk to the bizzies" culture
As I was born and bred in Liverpool, it's got to be Liverpool.
I like the compactness of the city and the hardiness of the people. During the city of Culture Year, Alexi Sale made 3 programmes about the city for the BBC. The programmes were rich in the history and culture and one phrase of Alexi's stuck with me. He said the city looked outwards to the world, not inwards into the country and I think he was right.
It has to be Manchester. Whilst there have been more than a few developement disasters here there is nothing like the souless wastelands around Liverpool. The pathfinder scheme has to rank as one of the most shocking bits of urban planning ever- mile after mile of derelict victorian housing and burnt out pubs. Scandalous waste.
Manchester has the best shopping, bar and eating oppotunities outside London, plus a public transport system that actually works.
If you like generic shopping centres, chain coffee shops, "trendy" bars and soulless apartments, then the sprawling, concrete pisspot that is Manchester is just right for you.
The more cultured amongst us will prefer Liverpool.

Manchesters public transport is a disgrace. Firsts bus service is expensively woeful (highest bus fares in the uk) The metrolink is overpriced & has only created a two tier transport network. Its doenst solve any problems, its slower across Manchester on that , than the old centreline bus it replaced & its twice as expensive as the rail service it replaced. The trams are derisory. Its funny that Balckpools which are 70+ years old & carry only 3 million less passengers a year offer a far more comfortable ride. The recent upgrade has achieved what? more chaos, breakdowns. The only thing its benefitted have been uniform makers & the suppliers of signage & stationery.
GMPTE is a toothless tiger. The cartel of First , Stagecoach & Arriva has made Greater Manchesters bus network a shambles.
People moan about Londons transport network but its the work of genius compared to the private profit making cartel that afflicts Manchester. Could you imagine the chaos if they had to endure the full joys of a deregulated bus network , run purley on commercial grounds?
As for the rail service 'Northern Rail' , the worst franchise in the country, with the oldest, worst trains running on the worst infrastructure. The joys of the railbuses are mant as they clank / bang along full to the brim. TPE is ok but again , not enough rolling stock.

Personally I like visiting both places.
Move to Warrington?
I was thinking Chorley myself.
OT: I was up the Tower with my boy just yesterday.
Amazing views on a clear day but too many stairs for my liking

Feel free to back this up with an insightful and interesting explanation, maybe others will follow suit.

I'm proud of my Liverpool heritage.
But my dad was born in Manchester.
