What symptons when a blu ray disc wont play due to a required firmware update

Had my sony blu ray player for almost 3 years now and its never failed to play a disc. Got a blu ray from amazon and it could not load the disc, amazon sent on a replacement and it wont play the replacement either.
When I put the disc in the blu ray player makes a lot of noise trying to read the disc for about 30 seconds or so I then then get a question mark and a message saying invalid disc. Is this what happens when a firmware update is needed or is this rather a sympton of a faulty disc.
