  She's like the goalie...........she can't leave the back section of the court. She has a specific job which is to dive around and stop the ball hitting the floor when it's smashed

  I guess she wears a different strip so she stands out to the umpire...........like a goalie wears a different strip in football

  Oh and by the way.............it's an optional position
  
  They don't have to have one..........they can play 6 'outfield' players if they want
