Hi everyone, obviously i'm fairly new to this place and would just like to know can anyone join in with the predictions or is there a place where you have to register?
Also just like to say Jon Champion did as usual an excellent job last night, the standard of commentary for football in this country really is excellent, which is worrying for me as its what I want to do as a job! I think ITV's footy coverage is excellent, with three quality presenters and commentators (4 if Jones is included!) but I just wish ITV would give Jim Beglin more games as for me he is number 2 co commentator in the country behind Andy Gray. I also think this week has highlighted ITV's need for a new presenter as what with Jim Rosenthal busy with ITV Sport.com and Steve Rider away with the grand prix they had no one in back up and no presenter for two ITV 4 games, they will certainly need another for the arrival of the FA Cup and England games. One more point I do feel a bit sorry for Jim Rosenthal who never really gets any ITV 1 games, the last time he was covering one was at the start of this season when he did the Champions League qualifiers. I think he's maybe owed some more?

Anyone can take part in the predictions competition. (As long as they don't have inside info!)

Casinoman usually posts the list of games for the following week around Monday, so just post your predictions on here any time between then and the deadline he sets.

Jim Rosenthal suffers (if that's the right word) from being a good all-rounder. For 8 years he was an excellent Formula One presenter, and he's also good with rugby union and boxing. I guess he's not going to be too miffed about a lack of opportunity on ITV1 football matches when he gets plenty of ITV1 exposure on other sports.

The problem Jim Beglin has is that so few people remember him as a player.

It shows what a good co-commentator he is that he is getting as much work as he does.
I also think this week has highlighted ITV's need for a new presenter as what with Jim Rosenthal busy with ITV Sport.com and Steve Rider away with the grand prix they had no one in back up and no presenter for two ITV 4 games.

Matt Smith was able to present all the games. There was no need for another presenter. (And no studio to have done a separate presentation for ITV4, as the usual ITV Sport studio, studio 7, is being used for the Cricket World Cup.)
They will certainly need another for the arrival of the FA Cup and England games.

Jim, Steve and Matt will easily be able to handle the FA Cup and England commitments.

Good to hear Palmer on the Football League again.

I didn't know Sky used your studios, thought they had there on at Isleworth.

Thanks too to liverpool_9009 for the info on Canadian coverage, and to IanFergus for the website link for North American coverage.

What's the general verdict on the standard of programming/commentators over there?

Steve, the gaffer from EPL Talk did a recent set of interviews at SportelAmerica 2007 http://epltalk.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=192161 with execs from various networks in the U.S. (FSC & Setanta notably) and including Gol TV whose head guy said with a straight face that Ray Hudson was the only indispensable member of their announcing team, their jewel in the crown - that gives you some idea of the general standard over there!!

Not Sky, but Doordarshan - who are doing all their ICCCWC coverage from London.

Maybe they would be ABLE to but will Michael Grade WANT them to?

When the new FA contract starts, I expect clashes between Grand Prix and weekend football on about 3 to 4 weekends per year, excluding World Cup Finals and Euro Finals every other year when the number will be much higher.

This FA contract is ITV's richest ever sports contract - they will need to maximise viewers and that means not just regular football fans - it means bringing in casual viewers.

I just don't think Rosenthal and Smith are nearly big enough names for this.

Take 2010. There would be 11 possible weekend clashes:

FA Cup - Rounds 6, semi, final (3)
    World Cup Finals (5)
England internationals (3) (say 1 weekend friendly before finals, 2 weekend Autumn qualifiers for Euro 2012)

Say there are Grand Prix on half those weekends - ie 5 or 6. I can't see any way that what would be 5 or 6 of the very biggest events of the year (and the most expensive) will be left to Rosenthal and Smith.

At the Walker's Stadium for Leicester v Derby it's the usual Football League pairing of Bill Leslie & Garry Birtles.
