The BBC has today announced Doctor Who Extra - a brand new series, exclusively on BBC iPlayer. Doctor Who Extra is much more than a ‘making of’ show as we follow Peter Capaldi every step of the way throughout the creation of his first season as the Doctor. Over the course of 12 programmes we trace the highs and lows of Doctor Who’s most ambitious run of episodes yet, getting the inside take on series 8 from the people who made it.

The Doctor Who Extra team had unparalleled access to stars including Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman and Samuel Anderson (series regular Danny Pink) plus guests Frank Skinner, Keeley Hawes, Michelle Gomez, Ben Miller, Foxes and many more. Writers, such as Lead Writer and Executive Producer Steven Moffat, and directors also contribute as they spill the beans on the on and off-screen drama.

Casual viewers will enjoy the fun, fast pace and lighter side of Doctor Who Extra but there’s plenty for fans, too, as we take a quick dip into the archive for every edition, reflecting on how Doctor Who’s history is echoed in this current series.

Packed with emotion, great stories and a real sense of ‘access all areas’, Doctor Who Extra is essential viewing for everyone who’s ever watched Doctor Who and wondered what it’s a like to be a part of the team that brings this global phenomena to our screens.

Doctor Who Extra is produced by BBC Cymru Wales and executive produced by Steven Moffat, Brian Minchin and Jo Pearce. Each 10 minute Doctor Who Extra episode will be available after that week’s Doctor Who episode on BBC One.

*Audiences will also be able to access Doctor Who Extra via the BBC’s Red Button.

So it's basically just shorter Confidentials. Sounds cool. Let's hope they are better than the ones we had for Series 7

    Thanks for this news.
I always like these sorts of behind the scenes programmes. Confidential was nearly always entertaining, and this looks like it will be too.

Sounds like doctor who confidential lives again, in online form. Interesting stuff. Although I have to say, if they can afford to make it, an bbc three still exists at the moment, it's strange that they wouldn't want to show it on tv. It's not like a ten minute show is very intrusive on a schedule. Will watch this kind of thing sometimes but don't find it a big deal to watch always, but I say it would be good for it to be on tv because the more doctor who content is on tv the more the show is ultimately seen as a big deal. With all the reality shows getting their own spin off, Doctor who should be able to promoted on tv outside of the show once more.

With no spin offs like in the days of torchwood/sarah jane adventures, it would helpful more than ever. Not saying the show is struggling or is desperate for publicity, as that's obviously not the case. I just think that it deserves it, and that no show can ever get too much publicity.

It doesn't seem different to either Confidential or the Behind The Scenes/Lens thing we had for Series 7.

Having it as 10 mins is smart. Confidential was bloated with it 30-60 mins ones.

    Episode 1

Not a fan of the OMGZAMAZEBALLZ narrator - but eh, good to see some behind the scenes stuff, and Peter playing scenes differently than we saw them on screen.

    Yup, pretty much this.

Am I the only one who thought that's a rather extravagant set for the bank of the Thames scene, surely they didn't build all that for 5 minutes of an episode?
