vista, modem, moving computer, any ideas?

Hi dilemma for all you really knowlegable people out there.
Got an acer desktop running vista using tesco broadband, had it nearly 2 years no probs.
Last friday moved our office into spare bedroom, now computer won't recognise modem, (yes it does work I'm running a laptop with xp on it at the mo), tried deleting, reinstalling, to no avail, the modem icon is there it just seems to dislike it, I'm presumming it's something on vista.
any ideas,
Husbands also bought a wireless router that he'd like to set up, but I'm not allowing it until we can get the old modem recognised. It's a belkin g+ any thoughts before I let him loose would also be gratefully appreciated.
