What does Lord Coe find bizarre?

Athletes who spent their time writing banal coments online during competitions instead of concentrating on winning medals.

Well said, Lord Coe. Not your biggest fan but thanks for having the guts to speak out agains the tidal wave of Twitter mania. Nice to hear somebody else agrees that there are things more important than instant fame and celebrity.

Coe worked hard and ended up with it all. Fame, position, authority, respect, money .....He didn't spend his time posing naked infront of the camera or playing with his phone. He knew that if he wanted the real prizes, NOW was his time.

Is this sarcasm? I mean I think it is, but with the lack of vocal tone its always hard and it could go either way. Hmm, well I will take a dive

Lord Coe got all that for being very good at running. He is able to run really well, running on a flat surface really well.

I mean Norman Borlaug is pretty much an unknown, he didn't do anything as amazing as running really well. He just saved over a billion human lives, not running well.

I know Lord Coe is something of a hero right now, and I'll agree he was a great figure head for the Olympics.

But I suspect he's a bit of an old fart in reality. He was a Tory MP after all.

As if writing a 'banal' comment on Twitter is going to distract any athlete from performing to their best, by definition if it's 'banal' it hasn't required much thought so shouldn't be too distracting.

There is as much logic in saying it about Twitter as saying they shouldn't have banter with their fellow athletes. IMO

I'm sure athletes don't train all the time! I loathe twitter but if people want to use it, fine. If it affects there perfomance (quite how I cannot fathom) then that is up to them. Not for Coe to tell them what to do. He's not the "employer".

You'd think Lord Coe, although a lifelong Tory supporter, would be more concerned at the amount of school fields being flogged off by this current government

I do see his point though

Would that be the billions who would already be dead if he had done nothing?

Well I guess we will have to wait for a long time to see if they die. Which they will, because he didn't make them immortal. So I guess in the end he was wrong and we should just die and be done with it :P

He probably finds the fact that BW got a knighthood bizarre. He probably thinks DB deserved it more!

It might be more effective if you sent him your congratulations via @sebcoe.

That's all well and good, but he's being supported by a sporting establishment who funds his training.
You can say 'let him have fun' but he's got obligations. If he's told to knuckle down he pretty much has to. He can't do whatever he wants because it's his life. If he wants to do that then he has to make a choice about whether he wants to pursue sporting excellence or fanny about like a Twitter celebrity.

He's not getting papped pissed and falling out of nightclubs  He's just tweeted a few pics of himself, that's all.

He's 18, not 30. He has his whole life in front of him, plenty of time for him to achieve sporting excellence. He managed an Olympic bronze medal, even though he had to train while his dad was dying, give the boy a break.

The main thing that Coe finds bizarre is that he can't get a tax dodging cut out of their Twiitter comments.

This is 2013 (just) Social media is a way of life. If it had been about in the 80s I am sure athletes would have used it, no doubt Coe would have been the subject of a few less than complimentary tweets by Steve Ovett!

Exactly. I also find the way my younger colleagues don't seem to be able to leave their phones alone for 5 minutes annoying, but it doesn't seem to be impacting on their work, so it's my problem not theirs.

And also managed to combine this with doing his A levels & achieving excellent results in those too.

I don't use twatter but did Lord Coe's lot promote the olympics using twitter when the games was on??

    Bet they bloody well did.

Simple, tell them when they are training or competing that socialising whether electronic or human contact to have it limited to a set period. I can see how Coe is upset as it must cost the sports council a fortune every time Tom Daley dives into the pool with his Nokia stuffed down his briefs.

Tell Coe to twatter off and find something else to interfere with.
