I don't have strong views on who should be the next Doctor but I know that it definitely must be somebody with roots in British theatre and not in genre television. Obviously there are candidates that would fit both criteria which is fine.

But I do think that the most obvious rule of Doctor Who casting is that almost all the Doctors and certainly all the good Doctors came out of the theatrical tradition.

In fact this is such an important rule and one so frequently ignored in these debates that I think I shall repeat myself daily until the final decision is announced.

I'd love it to be Colin Morgan, but don't see it happening. It's most likely to be someone fairly unknown.

I'm gonna go very left field, and say Moffat will quit, Mark Gatiss will become showrunner, write all the episodes and cast himself as the Doctor.

:D i thought the exact same thing last night for a fleeting second

I just asked by b/f and he said "Philip Glenister AS Gene Hunt"

"Get back in the Tardis you tart!"

    "It's 3209, lunchtime and we're 'aving 'oops"

    "Fire up the Tardis!"

I'm sorry but this idea is AWESOME SAUCE! Gene Hunt.......The Doctor.

I've been saying this for years!!!! He'd be awesome!
Philip Glinister would be awesome anyway though!!!

Other than that, Steve John Shepard would be pretty good in imho

I said Steve John Shepard weeks ago .. He would be brilliant

I think an established actor who isn't worries about typecast and would give us 4 or 5 series ...

Can't stand Jonas Armstrong. Robin Hood would have been better with a different actor.

No particular problem with the unbolded names, but the two bolded ones would be horrendous...

If Ian McKellan can go to ITV to make a crap sitcom he can definitely be the Doctor :)

I would absolutely love Ian McKellen to do it. And I do think it's something he would seriously consider, as he clearly has no aversion to genre roles.

But he had to take a lot of convincing to commit his time to The Hobbit due to his age, especially as it was revealed earlier this year that he's been battling cancer for years now. So I can't see it happening. A wonderful "what if" though. :)

 ... If Matt Smith has seen all the roles Karen Gillan has been snapping up & wants a slice of that himself?

It might be another opportune moment to go, but my heart is still breaking...

Now for something very different?

It has to be someone ginger. I vote Rupert Grint

    He would be AWESOME!

    Other thoughts:

    - Ben Whishaw
    - Robert Sheehan
    - Russell Tovey

Or if they don't want someone quite so young:

    - James Nesbitt
    - Hugh Laurie

I know other people like James Nesbitt, but to me he's one of the blandest actors imaginable. Even in The Hobbit I could have easily believed he was still playing that man who got his kid's hair cut in the Yellow Pages ad...

I love Rupert Grint, but I just don't think he's yet got the maturity to take on a role of this depth - I know Matt was only 26 when he began, but I think he's got an old soul.

Love all the shouts for Jason Isaacs, but I'm still holding out hope that some day he'll be the Master. That really would be something! I'd be happy with Ben Whishaw or Ben Daniels, but let's face it; the DW team has got it bang on the last 3 times. I don't think they'll let us down this time either.

Tom Felton. Played Malfoy in the Potter films and would bring something new and possibly darker to the role.

I think people should look at their suggestions on Wikipedia and IMDB before they start suggesting them.

Quite a few of the suggestions have other commitments.

e.g. I would have thought that Olivia Coleman and David Tenant are going to be busy with the next series of Broadchurch.
