The people out the back of my house have young children that scream from morning til night April-September. I couldn't give a shite if any of my noises irritate them. I don't actually have wind chimes but may buy some to drown out the incessant piercing whinging from the little darlings.

My old neighbour was an industrial sculptor, who specialised in reclaiming and creating art pieces out of discarded metal works.

His works were pretty impressive. He once created a 6-ft dining table out of nothing but bike chains. His studio was heavily sound-proofed so I didn't mind occasional muffled sounds of a chainsaw, hammer and such.

Then came the day he had six copper pipes at various lengths up in his garden tree as a set of wind chimes. From that moment on, I plotted his demise. Especially on breezy days.

I wept with happiness when I realised I wasn't hearing it any more. Hurray! He had finally taken them down, but a couple of days later the sculptor came to our door, asking if we knew anything about the disappearance. Turned out someone had stolen the chimes.

While he lamented over the missing chimes, I was all :( but once I closed the door, I was :D all day long. I'm willing to bet it was a neighbour who was irritated enough to nick the chimes. Thank you, whoever you are.

Where on earth do you get the idea from that, that we all dont care about people.

Yes her dog barks but she is 90 years old. I could report her to the parish council and she would have to either train the dog or have it re-homed.. But that would probably be the end of her. So yes at times I have to put up with a barking dog. Yes I have to put up with a loud clock but she has had it since she was married, so would be very mean to have her stop winding it up.
Yes we care about others and are tolerant of others.

Its a wind chime that hardly ever chimes, its on a fence where no ones else lives the other side and because its on a fence it only tinkles when the wind blows a certain way.. or hedgehogs are coming under the fence.
Goodness the intolerance of some people is amazing, I'm beginning to the think I read the OP wrong and they asked if anyone has a range of church bells in their garden :D

From what you posted. Barking dogs and clocks loud enough for neighbours to hear through walls are antisocial, no matter what age people are, as are chimes that other people might not want to listen to. But there clearly isn't a problem because none of you seem to care, which is great, because in a different neighbourhood all those things could easily cause conflict. It's not about a lack of tolerance but about considering other people. A dog barking occasionally, a baby crying for a bit, that kind of thing can't be avoided and of course people should have a degree of tolerance, but we're talking about people making deliberate choices to have the noise they want, regardless if others can hear it or want to listen to it.

Don't forget, in your first post on this thread you said, "I would not have one before as was always worried about the lady next door not liking them even though they are only medium size ones. Now I dont really care if she can hear them anymore."

I'm taking you at your word.

    That is true
but little chimes are not antisocial, I bet no one even knows I have them.
No I dont care if she hears anything I do anymore. When I first moved here I was worried about upsetting anyone, but soon realised its a great village where people live real lives and have chickens, peacocks , horses, farmers go shooting, they have picnics and BBQ on the green. The pub has beer festivals and so on. Its not like a town or city where people are intolerant of others. Yes sometimes next door's dog and clock get on my wick but as I said she is old and so I give her some leeway and actually once you decide to let things go, they dont really bother to as much anymore.

They're shrinking. You said they were medium before. ;-)

I think living in a flat where we had 4 under 10s above us a lady learning to play the accordion below us and next door getting close to divorce on one side and couple who listen to some sort of noise they call music long and loud every evening we either learn tolerance or we go mad. I chose tolerance and tinkling wind chimes above my kitchen sink. Much better than getting mad about it.

I personally love the sound they make.

Well I looked on goggle graphics to see how big some are. compared to them mine are tiny so changed from medium to smaller .:D
They are about 8inches from top to bottom with thin poles that are probably about 4inches long. So not the tiny ones.

You might just be under-estimating her strength.

That dog is all she has. She is housebound and does not have family. She got it from a rescue, no jabs still intact and a it was a year old JR.. What rescue would give a old lady a JR for a pet and think its OK

I'm used to it now. I think you can train yourself to relax rather than stressing about a noise. I did debate with myself for ages on should I report it then decided I could not live with myself, if anything happens.. Once I made that decision I was OK with it and didn't get edgy when the dog barked anymore.

Once in bed I listen to my wildlife pond with the fountain and hear the chimes here and there the frogs croaking and hedgehogs snuffling around.. and I chill right out and sleep like a baby :)

My dad used to have one in the back garden that he used to have to tie up with a elastic band at night time because the neighbours house faced our back garden and it kept them awake otherwise which is fair enough really.

Our next door neighbors have some out the back. We used to have some hanging from our staircase until the cats got at them. I don't mind them. They sound nice when it's windy.

I think people should be legally allowed to obliterate wind chimes with a shotgun, along with the selfish bastards who think they have a right to inflict them upon their neighbours.

Seems to be more for than against in this thread. I think most people find them relaxing. I never cared one way or the other about them until I was caring for my dying sibling, she had 3 in her garden and my room was at the back.. after a bloody hard day of caring and lifting etc I would go to bed and the sound of the chimes and her fish pond fountain would just make everything OK again I would sleep soundly and then I would be ready for another day.
That is why I have chimes in my memorial wildlife garden, one its a memory, and two, it calms my mind at night-time along with the water noise from the fountain..
Its not loud, its not offensive. its just a soothing sound.

Maybe those who hate them have only heard those that are more decorative than in tune. I've heard a few of those, they are just a clanking type noise :D
