RTÉ presenter Gerry Ryan has been found dead at his apartment in Dublin.

Ryan (53) failed to show up this morning for the 2fm radio show he has presented since 1988.

He was found at his apartment at Upper Leeson Street in Ballsbridge at 1pm.

The cause of death is unknown at present. Gardaí are investigating but foul play is not suspected.

In addition to his popular radio programme, the controversial broadcaste, who joined RTéin 1979, presented a host of television programmes, including Ryan Confidential, Gerry Ryan Tonight, Ryantown, Gerry Ryan's Hitlist and Operation Transformation.

He co-presented the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest from Dublin’s Point Theatre and replaced Pat Kenny for an edition of The Late Late Show in 2008.

He published his autobiography - Would the Real Gerry Ryan Please Stand Up - in 2008.

Ryan was consistently one of RTÉ’s most popular presenters, reflected in the fact he was the station’s second highest paid broadcaster with a salary in 2008 of €558,000.

The broadcaster announced a separation from his wife Morah in March 2008 after 26 years of marriage. The couple have five children.

His RTÉ colleague Miriam O’Callaghan wrote on her Twitter account: “Tragically it is true. So terribly shocking and sad. Life is just too cruel sometimes. RIP.”

Former 2fm colleague and now Today FM broadcaster Ian Dempsey wrote on Twitter: “Gerry Ryan RIP - shocking news just breaking - a big loss to radio and Ireland.”

Shocking news. Grew up listening to him on the radio and watching him on the telly. An Irish institution.

RIP Gerry

Been following the rumours on Twitter and hoping it would turn out to be a hoax.

My sincerest condolences to his family, especially the children.

    Rest in peace Gerry.

Desperately sad :( He's genuinely famous in Ireland....easily on a par with someone like Terry Wogan in the UK.

Listen to 2FM every morning, still cant believe he is gone....

Listening to 2FM now and I have been close to tears a few times listening to the messages being read out, you can hear the emotion in the voice of the presenter, he has nearly lost it a few times.

G Ryan - What company, what fun, what wit, what insight.

Today, we have lost the soul of the Irish nation, the voice of the Irish people and a true legend and gentleman.

And somewhere out there 5 young people have lost their Daddy.

An immensely sad day. I will miss Gerry so very much

Considering the large number of Irish people who post here on Digital Spy, it is shocking that they haven't been bothered to report this..obviously it isn't as big enough news as "Mel B only washing her hair twice a week"

    Anyway RIP Gerry.

For those who don't know who Gerry Ryan is, I would say he was as big in Ireland as Jonathan Ross is in UK (or maybe just England).
Would that be a close enough comparision?

But he was huge in Irish broadcasting.

R.I.P Gerry, a true broadcasting legend gone way too soon.

Condolences to his family, who must be going through the mill right now.

Even bigger, I'd say. Because Ireland is so much smaller and because the same type of celebrity culture didn't exist, our broadcasters pretty much were our public figures for decades.
