2. A whole new tier of small-scale radio stations could be launched on DAB digital radio, new research from Ofcom suggests. The regulator tested an experimental DAB multiplex in Brighton between September 2012 and January 2013, using new lower-cost technologies including a variety of open-source software, which concluded that “it is feasible to deliver DAB in small areas at much lower cost than currently required for equipment to deliver wide-area coverage.” More

3. RAJAR, the official body in charge of measuring radio audiences in the UK, released new figures for the consumption of digital radio. The last three months, so RAJAR, have seen 28million consumers, more than half of the UK adult population, listen to digital radio. More

More

5. BT has struck an £200m-plus deal to offer its sports channels to Virgin Media's 4 million TV customers, as the pay-TV rivals bury the hatchet to increase the pressure on Sky. 7. Turner Broadcasting has launched a 24-hour, time-shifted repeats channel in the UK, dubbed TCM + 1. The dedicated channel replaces the existing eight hour programming block on TCM2, which runs from 8pm-4pm, offering viewers 16 hours more programming per day. Further Details.

8. Over one million households are expected to have freemium channel BT Sport available when the Premier League kicks off on Saturday lunchtime. BT says the total includes both free and paying customers, although the majority are thought to be households that already receive BT Broadband, as opposed to defections from rival ISPs. “There is a mix of existing BT broadband customers – who have re-contracted their broadband for at least 12 months – and new broadband customers who have been attracted by BT Sport,” the company said. Ultra HD provides four times the resolution of today’s HD TV, providing more dramatic action for sporting events and a more compelling experience for premium movies and documentaries. Using the latest satellite solutions for Ultra HD creates exciting new opportunities for both broadcasters and industry partners. More

    TV panel makers are betting on a high rate of growth for UltraHD (4K) LCD TVs during the next four years. These companies expect to ship nearly 943,000 UHD LCD panels this year, up from less than 33,000 units in 2012, according to the Display Materials & Systems Service at information and analytics provider IHS. The next two years will see shipments ramp up even more quickly to 7.1 million units in 2015, on their way to reaching 20.8 million units by 2017. The total rises much higher when including a type of lower-priced, lower-specification product called UHD Ready, panels, which mainly are targeted at the Chinese market. Suppliers collectively plan to ship as many as 4 million UHD Ready panels this year alone. More

    SES has pioneered the first Ultra HD transmission in the new HEVC standard from an Astra satellite at 19.2 degrees East. Working with its partners Harmonic and Broadcom Corporation, it presented an end-to-end demonstration at the SES Industry Days in Luxembourg using Harmonic’s ProMedia Xpress and a HEVC decoder reference-design system based on Broadcom’s BCM7445 device for receiving HEVC encoded Ultra-HD television transmission. Dolby Laboratories and Royal Philips Electronics in association with CAMERON | PACE Group (CPG) announced at NAB in Las Vegas that they have signed an agreement to integrate the Dolby 3D format into CPG’s 3D video content production workflow and to collaborate on the use of the Dolby 3D format. All parties believe that glasses-free 3D presentation in the home can be improved by delivering premium-quality autostereoscopic 3D content using the Dolby 3D format. Dolby is showcasing CPG’s 3D content in its NAB Show booth as part of its demonstration of Dolby 3D technology from post-production through distribution to playback. More

    MIPTV 2013 – Cannes. With Sony screens across the Palais and two conference sessions, there was no escaping 4K UltraHD. SES jumped at the opportunity to announce the launch of its SES Ultra HD Experience initiative, which invites content providers and broadcasters to work with SES to support the development of the Ultra HD value chain. “You’re not alone. We are here today to say to you: let’s work together,” said Norbert Hoelzle, SVP, commercial Europe, SES, during Wedensday’s 4K session. “Let’s be the catalyst for industry and get the Ultra HD train rolling. The same way we HD started ten years ago, in an industry-wide effort, let’s start Ultra HD today.” More * * *

    The BBC has told London’s ‘Future TV’ summit that viewers are less and less enthusiastic about watching programming in 3D. The BBC’s technology guru Andy Quested, said the BBC had been an excited supporter of 3D broadcasting but that each time a new 3D show was televised, the audience ‘spike’ got lower. Quested’s comments come at the end of a two-year test of 3D at the BBC and include top-rated output such as the BBC’s flagship Strictly Come Dancing, natural history blockbuster Walking with Dinosaurs and comedy show Mr Stink, as well as last year’s London Olympic Games which transmitted dozens of events in 3D. The news is all the more disappointing given that the potential audience for 3D in the UK has expanded considerably, to around 1.5 million homes, over the past two years. More

    Broadcasters have further work to complete on Ultra High Definition Television before it can enter the broadcast mainstream, according to the EBU’s head of media fundamentals & production. Speaking at the SMPTE Annual Technical Conference in Hollywood Hans Hoffmann said the interfaces needed for programme production and for connections in domestic equipment both needed attention. The new family of compression technologies, HEVC will be published shortly, but much testing remains to be done. More.

    It's got no PCR PID, guess once PCNE Chinese moves off that TP it will start video testing. This is a Globecast rented TP so looks like this channel is contracted to them whatever it is.

    Showing a "technical fault" message for me.

    Is it called Akaal TV, or something like that, saw the EPG data a little earlier and I'm sure I saw Akaal mentioned, I could be wrong though, so don't quote me on it.

    Yes you are right

    Akaal Channel begins tests on Sky in UK

    New Sikh religious service, Akaal Channel is set for a Sky Digital launch in the UK in the coming days after tests were spotted off the EPG today.

    The channel was expected to launch earlier this year but had been postponed due to reasons unknown. However, the service is now ready to go live and EPG data showing details of the channel’s programmes have begun testing.

    Akaal Channel is a UK based broadcaster, which is going to provide religious, education, cultural and entertainment programming for Sikh and non-Sikh community. Akaal TV is the UK’s first television station under Sri Akaal Takht Sahib. Akaal Channel is going to broadcast in UK, Europe and internationally via web streaming www.akaalchannel.tv.

    Akaal Channel will be the third service targeting the Sikh community with religious and cultural programming after Sikh Channel and Sangat TV.

    Akaal Channel is expected to launch in early September on Sky Digital and online.

    The tests can be viewed at the following parameters below:
    -> Using your Sky Digi remote, go to Services Menu
    -> Select System Setup -> Select Add Channels
    -> Enter frequency: 11.621 (H), FEC: 2/3, SR: 27500
    -> Find Channels and Press SELECT
    -> Highlight “50879″ service and press Yellow button
    -> Return to Services Menu
    -> Other Channels (6) on STB / (8) on Sky+
    -> “50879″ should be listed and available

    On a Digital Spy forum note... Looks like they are finally merging the two Sky forums together :)

    Yep which is good news, but where is the "Pinned" thread(s) from the Sky+HD forum, especially the "Time for a New HD Channels thread"?

    Edit: Found it, It's a few pages down the list, currently not able to access it, so can't bump it up. If the Mods are reading this, could we please have it Pinned again.

    Thanks.

    Yea, however most of the pinned threads could have done with being unpinned.

    I agree though I think it is important we have the New HD Channels one even though there aren't many new HD launches these days.
