"Pearl" was another song almost ruined by Noel's misheard lyrics spot: "... and she plays the piano / in her nightclothes". Elkie Brooks had been in a band called Vinegar Joe alongside Robert Palmer for some years previous to this. I was reminded of a parody called "Earl's A Winger" which I thought was by a Northern comedian but I see from this link was in fact by Richard Digance - not quite as good as I remembered it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJaCCuVvV8k
Nice one! Thought I was the only one who remembered 'Earl's A Winger'. I can't help but remember it whenever I hear 'Pearl'.
Just to clarify and assuming 31/3/77 will not be repeated, next week's The Sky At Night will be the replacement for 4/8/77 meaning just one left for 8/9/77 after this.
These BBC4 repeats are like the musical equivalent of Granada's All Our Yesterdays (now there's one for the teenagers !) - that programme ran for decades, so why shouldn't this !

well hopefully it'll go on and on,but i'm at least hoping the repeat run will last to 2014,TOTP's 50th aniversary year
According to my telly mag. one of the artists featured tonight is Marilyn McCoo.
For those unaware, she was the lead singer of "The Fifth Dimension." A much underrated singer in my opinion.
She still has a great following, even today.
Lots of clips of her recordings on YouTube, including this one of mine, of my favourite by her.

I love, LOVE, LOVE that song. I'd forgotten all about it until it featured in a low-budget Canadian film, Last Night, which featured the brilliant Sandra Oh (now one of the leads in Grey's Anatomy).
I also have a friend in LA who is Marilyn McCoo's doctor!
And yes, both she and Billy Davies Jnr were in The Fifth Dimension.

Glad you liked it.
I post clips of my vinyl jukeboxes on YouTube, just to share with other enthusiasts, this clip's managed to attract over 4000 hits since I put it on.
Tivo says tonights repeat is the EDIT .
I wonder if that means it was cut tonight too.
I shall compare recordings later .
Thursday night was 32 minutes but as per usual the inept BBC staff were unable to get the ratio right yet again.
Incompetence with such regularity is getting annoying
I thought 1982-88 was the best period of the show.
If that period of music means most to you, I can understand you feeling that way.
However ...
I'd argue that TOTP's evolution across the 80s into endless of forced grins, the 'we're having a party' atmosphere, fewer studio performamces as promo video explodes and an audience populated more by a paid-up 'party-goers' than real people all contributed to its ultimate demise ...

However annoying those things were it did not cause the demise of TOTP 20-25 years later.
Have to say I preferred the recorded version of Chanson D'amour which has great drive and a fantastic sax solo. MT were fixtures for variety shows in the seventies.
It was always a great thing about the British charts that songs like CD were able to hit the very top.

Depends on viewing figures.
Yes and Cliff is about to disappear from the charts for two years. But when he comes back he does so with the greatest record of his career.

You can't beat a good tune, can you?
If they do I shall stop watching when they hit late 1981.
The music, and the programme, began to dive around then.
I thought 1982-88 was the best period of the show.
Lots of good tunes between 82 and 88.
Check out and listen to the top radio hits in the USA for each year (a lot of them are UK artists)

Thats when they mixed the audience with the acts. Hated that. All ballloons getting tossed around . Miming badly.

I imagine that is because you are not old enough to remember 1971-1973.
If that period of music means most to you, I can understand you feeling that way.

Seems odd that popular music all went down hill at a precise moment.
However annoying those things were it did not cause the demise of TOTP 20-25 years later.
