I have my fasting blood test Tuesday, it was 80 (what ever units) last time which the Dr said was twice what it should be.
That 80 reading was that your HAB1c reading?

You can use what oil you like. But there are other oils and fats that are much better for you. :)

Go to Lidl , they sell an Oil that is very inexpensive and it is 100% Rapeseed Oil which is the most healthy Oil to use.
I am 20stone, and have Arthritus due to a lifetime on my knees as a plumber, Used to cycle but can't anymore, like you. I swim for an hour twice a week. Tested regularly for Diabetes and clear every time. However unlike you I have no sweet cravings, I dont use sugar at all or sweetners and don't eat sweets. I usually have a bar or Cadburys Fruit and Nut on Xmas morning, but that is more of a family joke ritual than a need or craving.
    Good luck.

I had 2lts of diet lemonade yesterday and the pain grew a little last night. Today I've just had tea with 2 sugars and no added sugar squash, and the pain is a little less than yesterday.

I can't understand why diet fizzy drinks affects me as they are supposed to be almost like water in terms of sugar content.

I think so, it was my fasting blood test. I have posted it before, but keep getting conflicting opinions.

The Doctor definitely said it should be half that at the upper limit.

I'll ask for a print out of my results when I go tomorrow.

Had my fasting blood test this morning, felt really bad as I was so hungry.

Won't get my results for a while but I asked for a print out of my previous results.

    2010 HbA1c 103mmol/mol 42 is the upper limit.

    2012 HbA1c 89mmol/mol

    So still very high.

Yes it will be about a week.

I'm in no hurry for the results, I expect they'll be high again.

Until I can come off the coca cola, it will be high most times.

Not had any cola for a week, but am really missing it.

    Cheers.

I just had a phone call from my Doctor and my test results are back.

    79 mmol.

I was expecting them to be high, although it has come down a little.

Made an appointment for next week so will see what the next step is.

Need to half my readings at the least.

    Coming off cola should help.

This is worrying to me. I LOVED fizzy drinks - coke, pepsi, 7up etc. I'd think nothing of drinking a 2lt bottle in a couple of days. Since being diagnosed I've not touched "full-fat" fizzy drinks at all. Switched straight to diet straight away. It was hard - very hard. I've never liked diet drinks (apart from the sugar-free orange squash from Tesco) as I hated the taste, and after taste. However I did it for my own good, and for that of my partner. It's taken me a good 6 months to get used to it, I still hate it but find it better than I did. I can't drink the full-fat stuff now, it's too sweet!

You're not doing yourself any favours drinking the normal Coke, try the diet, try Fanta or 7up or Sprite (they don't taste much different than the normal ones IMO).

A litre of coke contains 420kcal (22% or recommended amount) and 106g of sugar (118% of recommended amount). For comparison, a medium sized muffin (American for stodgy sponge bun) can have 35kcal and 37g of sugar. Also, an apple is 10-23g, Banana 17g and a big sweet orange 23g

I was first diagnosed in 2005 by chance but diabetes T2 was/is rife on my Dad’s side.

I am absolutely addicted to sweets/sugar and I mean it’s an addiction for me.

In 2005 I took my condition so seriously and did all the right things, altered my diet, purchased a bike, and the weight came off and at that time my diabetes control was diet only.

In 2005 I was about 17 stone, a few months on the bike and I was down to 14 stone.

Unfortunately knee injuries screwed up my cycle rides, in fact I stopped taking control all together by 2007 and the weight poured on, 21-22 stones by 2009.

I stopped seeing the doctor, wife and kids were really getting worried and work was taking up so much of my time, I really didn’t need to be nagged.

Finally 2009 our family doctor, with me screaming and kicking, got me to take metformin , 2 x morning 2x evening with food.

But strangely, instead of thinking, well mate you are on tablets, now take it more seriously, it had the opposite effect with me, I carried on eating as I was, letting the tablets take care of the condition.

2011 my weight was such, I knew I had to do something, so I put myself on an almost vegetable diet only, in the morning, it would be a couple of slices of whole grain bread and some fruit, 2 x pears or a large banana,--- I like fruit, then nothing until the evening, and I would eat late, (9 -10 pm but it would be a large bowl of steamed vegetables, with a stock cube and a baked potato, my glucose readings came down but still high, 9-10, but I did have my low readings, 6 on many occasions, but no exercise accept work.

Unfortunately I couldn’t maintain this control and certainly by the middle of 2012 I was way back into my bad habits and the weight poured on . I also took the decision to stop taking all my medication, Metformin and Glitz, I was sick to frigin’ death of being a slave to my medication, sick to death of it.

Oddly I stabilised at around 19 stone to present date.

Very interesting account OP, you should consider writing a blog - it would certainly generate a few subscribers :)

Good luck in reaching your goals in the future!

Cutting the carbs is the way to go. My friend is a diabetes nurse specialist and one of her patients with Type 2 used to eat TWENTY slices of bread a day. :o:o. She is now down to 12!!!!

I am recently back from hols abroad and the hotel had marvellous buffet style food. It was fascinating to see what people chose. I saw loads of people with just plates of chips. Not a bit of meat or veg in sight. Just chips. I also saw people with plates piled high with slices of bread, bread rolls, croissants and cakes.

Trouble with carbs is they are very addictive for many people.

I could always eat loads of fresh crusty bread, biscuits, cakes, chocolate etc. Sometimes it was like I was taken over by some demon. I know others like this as well, who would have one slice of cake/ bread and before they knew it had ate the whole cake/ loaf.

I always know when I have had something that I thought was lowcarb and it wasn't, as my hunger and cravings come back full force.

Now I hardly have any and always feel full, not empty like I did before.

Try some sparkling water with a splash of fruit juice or diluting juice - my hubby had a bad cola addiction but now drinks sparkling water with some apple juice in it and finds it hits the spot :)

I think I've found an alternative to Coca Cola.

    7 Up Free.

At first I thought they'd mixed up the normal 7 Up with the 'free' stuff it was that good.

Has the fizziness and sharpness of coke that I like but sugar free and without the after taste most diet drinks have. And no caffeine either.

Yes I like this too, plus they do it in KFC, so if I want a drink when I'm out & about and don't want Coke I can go there. Fanta Zero is nice too - both cold, but also taste just as nice warm.

I'm another one who likes the seven up free and drink it all the time. It's the best of the low cal drinks in my opinion.

Water is still better for you. These fizzy drinks encourage you to want to eat more and also are bad for your teeth.

Saw the Doctor yesterday and got the rest of my results.

The HbA1c was actually 75 mmol, so slightly lower than I thought but still double what it should be.

My cholesterol was slightly high and my Vitamin D levels were low (I Don't go out much).

I've been referred to the diabetes specialist.

I've now got to try to go the next 3 months without normal Cola or other fizzy drinks and see what my next test comes out as.

The pain in my leg has been better since not drinking then, but is still there.

Good luck with your journey OP. Here is my story in the hope it will help/inspire/interest you.

At Christmas time 2010 I found myself very thirsty and going to the toilet frequently. I don't know why I knew what that meant, but I did. So I ignored it until after New Year and then went to the doctor in January. I had a blood glucose level of over 30 when I went in and she was ready to send me to hospital there and then. Following hospital appointments I was diagnosed with T2 diabetes and put on Metformin and another drug. I was unfit, overweight and a heavy smoker.

I immediately decided to overhaul my life, and in February 2011 I stopped smoking, joined a gym and completely gave up on all cakes, sweets, fast food... I discovered spin and other fitness classes and fell in love with them. I met a massive group of friends there and went regularly - 6 days per week, 3 classes per visit. I lost about 4 stone during this period taking me down to about 15 stone.

In Spring 2012, I discovered running and again fell in love with it. By Autumn, I had made loads of new running friends, ran dozens of half Marathons and was preparing for my first Marathon. I have now ran 3 Marathons and have another 2 coming up.

Now, I fluctuate my weight around the 15 stone mark. I regularly run races. I go between unhealthy binges and back to healthy. I am on no diabetes medication and do not think about diabetes at all and eat what I want. Whenever I go back to the clinic, they are more than happy with my progress and HBA1c results.

I still struggle. I still work hard. I have to force myself to run or go to the gym (but love it once I go) and run about 20-40 miles per week. I still struggle with my diet and constantly have to remind myself to add veg into meals and eat less sugary snacks.

Well, got my latest results today and HbA1c was down to 47 and cholesterol was 3.8. First diagnosis 3 years ago was 128. Drugs and cutting carbs seems to be the answer.

That's a good reading, top end of normal range.

    What drugs are you on?

I'm starting to understand how sugar levels work, but I am wondering how long it takes for levels to go down normally?

For instance if I checked my blood glucose level and it was 11 mmol/L (or 9% or 75 mmol/mol) how long would I need to wait so that I get my levels low enough to eat again?

4 metformin per day, gliclizide, atorvastatin, 0.6ml of liraglutide injected, plus adalat, indepamide and perindropil for blood pressure
