Its all down to the service providers, in my case... BT

their promises of up to 20 meg broadband sound great
but right now.......... 5 pm sun afternoon......

I reckon my broadband at the moment is about 1 meg if that

Its taken me over 20 mins just to get onto digi spy to post this rant.

Ive tried to do a speed check with Broadband Speedchecker but

get the message........ no server available

so theres not even enough b band to do a speed test.

Could be that sun a noon is a heavy usage time for BT and
lots of customers get a crap service.

Everything feels so slow and laboured right now,
I should close it all down and go do something more interesting

It wouldn't take a quarter that time on dial up.

You could do that but you may need the internet for something in the future like booking a ticket. In which case investigate the problem and the first step I would take is to listen for any noise (hissing, crackling) on the line when the internet is slow.

thinking it over , I thought ... could torrents be slowing me down

I went there and saw I was downloading about 450 k per sec.

I switched off torrents.... suddenly I found I could do a speed check

    I came in at 5.5 meg .....

Which I suppose ive got to be satisfied with !

( makes me wonder how we ever lived with 56 k dial up back in the
    2001 era ! )

Well, of course Torrenting would it down - it is using the connection, after all.

You should set speed limits for download and upload on your Torrent client.
