Sony DVD recorder RDR-HXD910

We were recently away on holiday and set our HDD DVD recorder programmed to record two things each week for the two weeks we were away. When we got back and switched it on it hadn't recorded them and went into a record mode from L1 which wasn't planned. Every time we cancelled it by pressing rec stop it restarted recording almost immediately. The only thing we could do was reset the machine by holding the on off button for ten seconds. As soon as it came back on it started recording again. We left the set unplugged for 2 days and turned it on and it immediately went into record mode again - recording line 1 rather than an actual channel. In the brief moments it is on before recording kicks in you cannot get the timer lists or title lists up as the menus won't navigate.
There was a big thunderstorm in London while we were away before the first scheduled recording was to take place. I don't know if this could have thrown it. Does anybody have any idea how we clear the recording that it tries to keep doing?

If you can get into the set-up menu then look for a Factory Defaults option and see if it will let you select it. This should reset the unit to the "out of the box" condition. This might stop this spurious recording but will mean you need to retune it and apply any other settings changes you may have made.

But there is a chance it could be bricked as a result of the thunder storm. A near by lightening strike could have poked a pretty nasty electrical spike down the aerial cable that could have fried the electronics.

Cheers - would a reset lose any programmes recorded to titles list?

it should not have any effect on any recordings already on the hard drive. It will however clear any future recordings you may have scheduled.
