I thought this thread was about the Abominable Andre, not Frank Bruno, but anyway....
I said it before and I'll say it again,as my point was obviously missed the first time. PA should not in any way be involved in perpetrating the MYTH that the mentally ill are so dangerous and frightening that they have to be restrained.
Yes,SOME people with mental illnesses CAN be prone to violence, but so can people with no mental health issues.
But let's not let faux-outrage get in the way of the truth,eh?
I don't do links but I read this earlier on..
simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/straitjacket
A straitjacket is a type of clothing used to restrain patients in mental health hospitals and psychriatic wards of hospitals.
A straitjacket has straps that restrain a patient's arms and hands. Hospitals put straitjackets on patients who have mental illnesses such as schizophrenia or paranoia to keep them from hurting themselves, other patients or hospital staff.
So, according to that piece straitjackets are used on psychriatic wards. Not really a MYTH then.
I've no idea what he said about either of the above, but that's not the issue. If someone thinks he's lying, back it up.
Actually,I think it's the WHOLE issue.
PA has yapped about a number of "serious health issues" which have turned out to be nothing of the kind.
He has form for bs-ing.
How can we be expected to believe a word that comes out of his mouth?
He's not above using his brother and his kids to flog his crappy tv series, so it's not much of a leap to assume that he would exaggerate about something as serious as mental health to perpetuate his victim status.

The MYTH I referred to was the one that the mentally ill are dangerous and frightening.
SOME of them are.
But many mentally ill people are able to live perfectly "normal" lives, and are no more dangerous and frightening than anyone else.

He's known for having issues. They are allegedly underplayed in public. But he has spoken of them, mainly the panic attacks. He hasn't to my knowledge gone into massive detail about the hospital. I'm going to have to put you on ignore now, as imo your comments are in bad taste.

Thank god for some sense. I've found some of the comments about his mental health truly disgusting. I was ganged up against for daring to speak out yesterday.

Everyone on here has been calling him a liar for saying he was in the same room as someone wearing a straitjacket.
People automatically jumped to the conclusion that he was saying he was locked in a room with people in straitjackets, when that is not what he said at all. He was on a psychriatic ward where there was a patient in a straitjacket.
I posted that piece from wikipedia to show that they do in fact use straitjackets on psychriatic wards.
You say the MYTH you were referring to was that mental health patients are frightening and dangerous... I don't recall PA saying that.
I agree Lexi. Their experiences do not compare at all. Frank has been diagnosed with bi polar and has been sectioned. At the height of his problems, he was considered paranoid and aggressive and a possible danger to himself and others. he's been open and honest about his mental health issues and has never tried to exaggerate for sympathy. He should be commended for talking about his problems.
PA on the other hand............
Indeed. Frank Bruno is dealing with much more than a breakdown. He's fighting an ongoing battle with his mental health and doing so with courage and dignity and quiet humour. And for someone not known for his eloquence he has spoken about it in a very matter of fact and moving way. That has IMO helped enormously to normalise mental illness and to generate an understanding of how fragile good mental health actually is.
That's why I say comparisons with Peter Andre are tasteless. While I have no doubt PA's been through bad times and does suffer a bit with ongoing panic attacks, his propensity to exaggerate and milk his various health issues for sympathy and money is not 'awareness raising' as I see it.
Nicola
Having spoke to my friend who is a mental health nurse.. She assures me patients in the past who needed to be restrained in a straight jacket where not left with other patients for their own safety .the reason being IF they were attacked by other dangerous patients . .. They could not defend themselves. Also someone suffering anxiety attacks /depression wouldn't be placed on a ward with dangerous patients.

No sorry-I didn't mean that PA SPECIFICALLY had said anything of the kind.
I meant that there is a GENERAL perception amongst many people, that people who suffer from mental health issues are dangerous and frightening and that by PA choosing to mention that there was a person in a straitjacket,he could be seen to be perpetuating the myth about people with mental health issues.

They wouldn't be left on their own Betty, there is always staff there to watch over them.
And when PA was hospitalised it was for more than depression/anxiety attacks, he had a nervous breakdown and was even having suicidal thoughts at that time.

If we are talking in the past.. There wasn't always staff there 24/7 .. That's how patients where able to harm other patients.
As for Peter.. I'm not saying he didn't have a breakdown but the occassion he was talking about was when he was having anxiety attacks I believe

No, he had a nervous breakdown.
And it's pretty disgusting that people are trivialising it and saying things like it was a case of "attentionseekingitis".:(
You were up in arms Betty about people attacking KP over her miscarriage...and yet you think it's perfectly ok to attack PA over his mental issues???

Peter has also revealed he was once treated in a psychiatric hospital after suffering from depression in the 90s. He said: "Over a two-week period I was having 20 to 30 panic attacks a day. I ended up in the psychiatric ward and the doctors didn't know what was going on. It was horrible, I was sitting with people with straight jackets on. I was thinking, 'What am I doing here?'"
Sounds like he was watching "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest".
Or maybe it was the same hospital that told him if he donated a kidney, it wouldn't be to his brother.

As a last resort and not without risk assessment.
Would also be away from the main ward & not in an acute admissions ward with the other patients, humiliation is not part of modern day psychiatric care.

Where did you get your quote?
The 36-year-old star ended up in hospital after suffering a breakdown 10 years ago, but this only made him worse because he convinced himself he was even more ill.
He explained to Britain's OK! magazine: "They didn't know what was wrong with me, but they soon realised that all I had was a breakdown.
"There was nothing wrong with me but I started to think this was because of the people around me. One woman in there had been tripping from an acid pill from the 70s. Another guy was in a straight jacket all day long and others had tried to commit suicide."
Despite sometimes still suffering from the panic attacks, the reality TV star - who has children Junior, four, and Princess Tiaamii, two, with Katie - insists he won't let himself fall so low again.

Why did you watch it The handful of people that get almost orgasmic posting on here just to throw insults about a man they have never met and spend more time talking about him than his fans baffling
I thought forums like this are meant for debate, but all I see is people getting off on coming up with words like abomination!
