Strange pop-up style problem on Vista

Just a minor problem I'm having on Internet Explorer 7.
If I click a link which is supposed to bring up a pop-up (ie, open in a new window), it does open but the original window in the background also changes to the same page - so I end up with two windows open on the same page when I should only have one, plus the page I was on before.
In the same way here on Digital Spy, if I click the 'Edit' button it should just let me edit my post in-situ, rather than take me to the 'Advanced Edit' page.
However, the white editable box does appear but the page changes to the 'Advanced Edit' page within a second or two.
Anyone able to tell me what is causing this problem and how I might solve it? Someone suggested it might be Java but I went to their website and installed the latest version yet I still have this problem.
