Hey everyone,

This is a sequel thread to the 1990 rank the number ones thread earlier, but since I don't want to flood the music page with loads of threads of a similar style this shall be used as one to discuss the number one of a particular year, with a different year discussed daily (although you can go back to discussing a year or song should you wish.

From 1990 we go to 1991, a year of novelty songs, oddball covers of 60's classics and the never-ending reign of Bryan Adams, here are the number 1's of that year:

Enigma- 'Sadeness Part 1'
Queen- 'Innuendo'
The KLF- '3am Eternal'
The Simpsons- 'Do The Bartman'
The Clash- 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go?'
Hale and Pace- 'The Stonk'
Chesney Hawkes- 'The One And Only'
Cher- 'The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)'
Color Me Badd- 'I Wanna Sex You Up'
Jason Donovan- 'Any Dream Will Do'
Bryan Adams- 'Everything I Do (I'd Do It For You)'
U2- 'The Fly'
Vic Reeves and The Wonder Stuff- 'Dizzy'
Michael Jackson- 'Black Or White'
George Michael and Elton John- 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me'
Queen- 'Bohemian Rhapsody'

As with 1990, rank from best to worst.

Vic Reeves and The Wonder Stuff- 'Dizzy' a personal fave. I was massive fan of Vic, and saw him and Bob at a gig in Sheffield of this year, adding to the memory.
Queen- 'Bohemian Rhapsody. All time classic, if a little overplayed now.
George Michael and Elton John- 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me'. I like it
The KLF- '3am Eternal. Not my favourite KLF track, but still great.
The Clash- 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go?'
    Enigma- 'Sadness Part 1. OK.
The Simpsons- 'Do The Bartman' Cash in, but from a period when The Simpsons was just about to be come the greatest show on TV.

    The rest:
    Queen- 'Innuendo'. Rubbish Queen song.
Hale and Pace- 'The Stonk'' One of the worst comic relief songs ever. Supremely annoying.
Chesney Hawkes- 'The One An'd Only' Just awful, although Simon Amstell almost made it likeable
Cher- 'The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)' Annoying
Color Me Badd- 'I Wanna Sex You Up'. Super Suck Group" which included Kenny G, George Michael, and Snow
Jason Donovan- 'Any Dream Will Do' Average song.
Bryan Adams- 'Everything I Do (I'd Do It For You)' Just go away, Bryan!
    U2- 'The Fly' Crap
Michael Jackson- 'Black Or White' possibly the most hypocritical song ever from definitely the most over-rated artist of all time.

    1. KLF - 3am Eternal. One of the best #1s of the decade from one of the best groups of the decade.
    2. Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody. Slightly docked a point as it's a re-issue but I don't care how overplayed it is, it deserves its place as one of the greatest tracks of all time!
    3. Cher - The Shoop Shoop Song. Hardly hailed as a classic but a great bit of pop which must have been played a ton as I remember it well given I was only 2 when it was released!
    4. Enigma - Sadness Part 1. Somewhat of a surprise chart-topper, great bit of chillout dance.
    5. Bryan Adams - Everything I Do (I Do It For You). Possibly higher up the list than those who had to endure it for 16 weeks at the time :p Class power ballad.
    6. Jason Donovan - Any Dream Will Do. Ahem, yes. I'm a big musical fan and Joseph is a superb example, wonderful soundtrack and fab song.
    7. Queen - Innuendo. Still pumping out the tunes right to the end, not one of their best but a fun listen.
    8. Vic Reeves & The Wonder Stuff - Dizzy. A silly novelty cover version but good for the occasional hearing.
    9. The Clash - Should I Stay Or Should I Go. Ok many may be horrified by how low this is, not that it's not a good song, just because I don't really have a connection to it and my main music tastes lie elsewhere.
    10. Chesney Hawkes - The One and Only. Would be higher up if, again, I had any connection to it - too young to remember it at the time.
    11. Michael Jackson - Black & White. Good listen but he's done better.
    12. George Michael and Elton John- Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me. Nice, just a bit dull.
    13. The Simpsons- Do The Bartman. Novelty track that's aged pretty terribly, like the show itself :p
    14. U2 - The Fly. Not a fan.
    15. Color Me Badd - I Wanna Sex You Up. Dull and painful to listen to.
    16. Hale & Pace - The Stonk. Just no. :p

    3am eternal (love this song!)
    Bohemian Rhapsody
Should I stay or should I go
    Dizzy
Don't let the sun go down on me
    Black or white
    The one and only
    The Fly
    Shoop shoop song
    Sadness Part 1
    Innuendo
    Everything I do
    Any dream will do
I wanna sex you up (although my friend thinks its hilarious and put it on whenever we have a few drinks!)
    Do the Bartman
    The Stonk

I did have to youtube a few of them!

    1. KLF - 3am Eternal. One of the best #1s of the decade from one of the best groups of the decade.

... and thats it... the klf were a league of their own, the rest was crap...

wish i could make a better contribution to these threads, but i really hated the early 90's, and #1s were never the best reprisentitives of any year.

Looking back at that list now it's no surprise that grunge took off at around this time. "Here we are now, entertain us" makes so much sense when viewed in the context of the other music of the time.

(I'd agree that the KLF are pretty much the only ones in that list worthy of a mention at all.)

From top to (absolute rock) bottom,

    Top of the class

U2- 'The Fly' - One of their finest tracks
The KLF- '3am Eternal' - Utter classic

    Above average
The Clash- 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go?' - Not one of my favourites of theirs but nice to see them hit the top spot.

Enigma- 'Sadeness Part 1' - Dreamy and lovely

Chesney Hawkes- 'The One And Only'- only because Nik Kershaw wrote it and he's ace.

    Didn't like any of these
    Queen- 'Innuendo'
    The Simpsons- 'Do The Bartman'
Cher- 'The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)'
Color Me Badd- 'I Wanna Sex You Up'
Jason Donovan- 'Any Dream Will Do'
Bryan Adams- 'Everything I Do (I'd Do It For You)'
Vic Reeves and The Wonder Stuff- 'Dizzy'
    Michael Jackson- 'Black Or White'
George Michael and Elton John- 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me'
    Queen- 'Bohemian Rhapsody'

Worst song of all time contender
    Hale and Pace- 'The Stonk'

I don't know all the songs (I was only three or four when they came out!), so I'll just rank the ones I do know. These are in order of my personal preference, not necessarily in order of quality!

Cher- The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)
Chesney Hawkes- The One And Only
Jason Donovan- Any Dream Will Do
    Michael Jackson- Black Or White
    Queen- 'Bohemian Rhapsody
The Clash- Should I Stay Or Should I Go?
Vic Reeves and The Wonder Stuff- Dizzy
George Michael and Elton John- Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me
Bryan Adams- Everything I Do (I'd Do It For You)
    The Simpsons- Do The Bartman

From 1991 we now move to 1992, a year largely dominated by ballads but also seeing success for dance anthems and an unlikely television star. 1992 would also only see 12 songs making it to the top spot, which is the lowest amount for a year within the decade. Here were the number ones of the year:

    Wet Wet Wet- 'Goodnight Girl'
    Shakespeare's Sister- 'Stay'
    Right Said Fred- 'Deeply Dippy'
    KWS- 'Please Don't Go'
    Erasure- 'Abba-esque EP'
    Jimmy Nail- 'Ain't No Doubt'
    Snap!- 'Rhythm Is A Dancer'
    The Shamen- 'Ebeneezer Goode'
    Tasmin Archer- 'Sleeping Satellite'
Boyz II Men- 'End Of The Road'
Charles and Eddie- 'Would I Lie To You?'
Whitney Houston- 'I Will Always Love You'

As ever, rank from best to worst.

This was actually double A side with These Are The Days of Our Lives, which was effectively Freddies farewell to the fans.

And as that song was better than any of the other original number 1's of the year, the pedantic part of me has to point this out as such ;)

I chose to highlight Bo Rhap since it was the more well known song, but I share the sentiment about TATDOOL, a beautiful song even if it is so sad seeing how frail Freddie is in the video.

don't forget that the re-issue of Bo Rap was a double "A" side with the fantastic song These Are The Days of Our Lives.

Edit: amazing that 2 other DSers have just this minute said the same!

I find it hard to watch the video without tearing up, it's beautiful and sad, but more than that shows the courage and dignity that Freddie maintained even as he neared his death (which was literally a few short months away).

I think it's sad it's not as widely known as Bo Rhap, because actually I think it's arguably one of Queen's most mature and intimate songs.

Nothing special at all that year, but would be happy to listen to any of these again if they came on the radio

Charles and Eddie- 'Would I Lie To You?'
    Tasmin Archer- 'Sleeping Satellite'
    Erasure- 'Abba-esque EP'
    Right Said Fred- 'Deeply Dippy'
    Snap!- 'Rhythm Is A Dancer'
Boyz II Men- 'End Of The Road'
    Shakespeare's Sister- 'Stay'

Don't really like these two but they don't offend me...

    Wet Wet Wet- 'Goodnight Girl'
    Jimmy Nail- 'Ain't No Doubt'

Musical abominations that I definitely never want to hear again...

Whitney Houston- 'I Will Always Love You'
    KWS- 'Please Don't Go'
    The Shamen- 'Ebeneezer Goode'

    1991: (Score out of 10)

Queen- 'Innuendo' 10 (Their blatant Led Zep tribute = my fav ever Queen single)
The KLF- '3am Eternal' 9 (Preferred Last Train to Transcentral)
    U2- 'The Fly' 9
Queen- 'Bohemian Rhapsody' 8 (for the true single "These Are The Days Of My Life" not that 1975 track)
Chesney Hawkes- 'The One And Only' 8 (Nik Kershaw penned classic guilty treasure)
Michael Jackson- 'Black Or White' 7 (Jacko commentary about deciding which makeup to use for his pigmented skin; but the video is so cringeworthy)
George Michael and Elton John- 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me' 7
Vic Reeves and The Wonder Stuff- 'Dizzy' 7
The Clash- 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go?' 7
    Enigma- 'Sadeness Part 1' 6
Cher- 'The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)' 5
Jason Donovan- 'Any Dream Will Do' 4
The Simpsons- 'Do The Bartman' 2 (I never rated The Simpsons. Period. Much preferred South Park)
Bryan Adams- 'Everything I Do (I'd Do It For You)' 2 (I think Bryan Adams has done quite a few great singles but I can't stand his two most well known tracks (this & Summer of 69))
Color Me Badd- 'I Wanna Sex You Up' 1 (I much prefer The Lonely Island's Dick In A Box; Motherlover; 3-Way (The Golden Rule); etc)
Hale and Pace- 'The Stonk' 0 (Two unfunny comedians with an unfunny song produced by Queen's Brian May .... Nowhere near as good as Bad News were)

    1992 (Rate out of 10)

Shakespeare's Sister- 'Stay' 9 (Am I the only one who thinks the chorus is similar to Queen's Who Wants To Live Forever?)
Tasmin Archer- 'Sleeping Satellite' 8 (co-written by John "Put Your Records On" Beck and featured most of Paul McCartney's then touring band on the recording)
Whitney Houston- 'I Will Always Love You' 8 (I actually dislike the Dolly Parton original)
