Just read this brilliant piece and I have to agree with every word of it. What do you say?

Some of the right wing politicians in some of the red states do seem to be of the nutty variety. But I don't believe that applies to the US or Americans on the whole though.

It's about womens rights with regards to pregnancy and some of the nutty laws the GOP are trying to introduce.

Notice that for the most part these laws are only introduced in certain states? It would be a coup for Obama and the Democrats if they started making this noise in the US Congress.

Sounds something from the Middle East countries that are usually flamed on here. But it's ok cos it's the West. Just some individual nutters.

What has the UK got to do with it?

I don't know, I think this one is fairly interesting because the same thing can happen in the UK. I am male and yet I see it as something women should be quite angered about.

Agreed. I'm sure there are just as many Americans shocked by what she is highlighting, as there are Brits.

I don't find this to be an anti-US thread. The thread title is the title of the article from the Huffington post. The contents of the article are shocking regardless of the country concerned.

If laws like that are passed in a country like America- western, modern etc, it makes it that much closer to home for any western woman. It's all very well being horrified by the things that happen to women in countries like Iran, Libya etc because it doesn't feel like it could ever happen here.

Infringements of women's rights in the US feels a lot closer to home.

I can see it turning that way, as it usually does.

I'm guessing they're predicting where this might go in that there'll be a bunch of people that do the whole "US is terrible because..." thing and then someone from the US will respond in kind. Of course, at that point the damn yank would be derailing the thread (i know how this game works). Also it won't be me sayin anything because I know we're all utterly evil, fat, stupid, mentally ill, addicted to porn, crack, smack, junk and jack and we have no healthcare, we interfere in everything, we bankroll Israel, nothing good comes from us etc.

Think that covered it all. :p

That's what you get for being the superpower, we had it back when we had an empire.

Never mind though, your turn ends soon!

...erm, "these aren't reasons the US is nuts". They're evidence that there are a bunch of dicks in the US who are in a position to enact really stupid shit. (And I agree that those people ARE dicks, and that the shit is, indeed, stupid).

That's not the same thing at all.

I might as well start a thread entitled "reasons DS is nuts- because some people keep making crass generalisations".

I suspect everyone wouldn't have been eye-rolling and getting defensive if it wasn't for the title of the thread, which came directly from the article being referred to.

What a shame, because now everyone is discussing that instead of the content of the article, which had something interesting to say about women's rights to their bodies.

In fairness it was the title of the article, although judging from BBs comments perhaps the title was the motivator for posting rather than reproductive rights.

And I agree... this is why OP should have been a LITTLE less stupid in naming their thread. The article's title is provocative, but justifiable. The thread title is just anti-American bullshit, really.

I think it says more about US politics. I may be wrong here but all that stuff in that article is tantrum throwing by the states who don't want abortion legal. As they can't outlaw it entirely they want to make it as hard and demeaning as they possibly can.

    Whoa there!

The OP has actually mis-quoted the title of the article slightly. It should read "10 reasons why the rest of the world thinks the USA is nuts" and if you read the article you'd probably agree.

TBH, I usually have little time for the Huff' Post's whiney, passive-aggressive rhetoric but I must say that I applaud the sentiment of that writer who is, basically, saying "F**k you. You have no idea what you're talking about and it's about time you were told".

It wasn't, though, was it? The title of the article is "10 Reasons the Rest of the World Thinks the U.S. Is Nuts". That's a valid position for an argument, whereas "10 reasons the US IS nuts", well, kind of ISN'T.

I agree with the article. But the OP has kind of made this an anti-US thing when it really didn't need to be.

Yes- you're probably right. It's frightening that such legislation is getting through though.
