What I did find was that to change my meter over with my existing supplier was free, but if I wanted to change suppliers the new suppliers would charge me £250 to swap the meter over to a credit meter.

I'm moving into a new place with a electricity key meter. Can anyone explain to me how it works and if its expensive or not.
I've only ever paid by quarterly bill and this is all new to me!
we have one for our flat just outside our door. I put in £30 a month and rarely if ever do we use the whole £30 on the meter. The meter we have also tells us how much is left & how much we get charged per unit. I'm not sure if all meters are like that???
I do find it a lot easier to budget using the key meter.
