If you were made to choose between the two, which would you keep?

I don't know if you are including married couples, but my husband is my closest family, so of course he would come first, along with my daughter. I would think the same would also be true for unmarried couples who have made a life together.

If that were not the case, I'd be thinking I was not with the right person.

Partner definitely. Nothing against my family, but they're distant and occasionally seen, whereas my partner and I share each day.

What happens to the choice you decide not to keep?

Depends why I'm having to make the choice. If my family made me choose between them and my girlfriend I'd probably choose her as the likelihood is they'd always have a problem with whoever I brought home*. If she made me choose, I'd choose them. As why would anyone want you not to be in touch with your family, even if they hated her I'd expect her to at least give me the option to see them myself, not that I would but I'd like the option.

*Unless their reasons were because she was abusive or something that's understandable.

They apologise for making me choose in the first place, and I call their bluff by choosing the latter

It would depend on why the decision had to be made to start with.

This is hard, I did not consider it a choice of either or, but when my Father (after a devastating injury) needed progressively almost 24 hours care it broke my relationship.

I did not choose but clearly my partner did.

Oh well his lose, I cared for my Father for six years and although it cost me my relationship, I would not change the love I had with him, I just wish my partner could have done so too.

I would probably choose whoever wasn't making me choose.

Although I consider my partner as much a part of my family as my blood relatives (more so than most of them), so the wording of the question is a little off for me.
