This is a repeat but I couldn't find a thread on it.
Spoof documentary about Fab FM's most eminent DJs, Dave Nice and Mike Smash. Top pop celebs pay tribute to the 'poptabulous' duo's outstanding contribution to British rock and pop history, and the programme charts their rise to stardom through a series of searching in-depth interviews and rare archive footage from the last 40 years.

It's on tonight following An Evening with Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse

One of the finest comedy shows ever made in the UK.

And satire that actually changed something, for once.

After you have watched this, check out a documentary called Blood on the Carpet on YouTube, about how Smashie and Nicey changed radio for real...

I just put this on as a filler but it's surprisingly good......

This is the kind of thing they did so well on Story Of he Twos which is the only decent thing they've done in the last 15 years

Removed from the original video release for copywrite reasons.

I don't normally care for either of these two, (Whitehouse and those bloody annoying insurance ads particularly), but this is great stuff. Very funny. Utilising and interspersing with the archive footage particularly.

So who are they supposed to be exactly, just a bit of various '60's/70's early 80's DJ's all amalgamated into one I suppose?

I came here wondering if it's been edited in any way.

Did they edit Stuart Hall out of the Nationwide titles?

They were a bit of everyone but mainly Fluff Freeman, Tony Blackburn, a bit of Kid Jenson, a bit of Tommy Vance, even a bit of DLT.

Yep, can see many of them in there. ;-) And Edmonds also now by the look of it.

Looks like its all going to go horribly wrong for them now. Is one going to get arrested or is that too current?! :o

That was brilliant, telly highlight of the night. DJ's done 'Spinal Tap' style. Loved it. :D

I think the one they sent up the most was Simon Bates, someone who by the nineties was seriously out of his depth with current music. Fluff mostly presented classic rock shows, whose audience was more specialised and would always clamour to hear an old Pink Floyd session. Bates, for all he was popular, had a show that had never changed for years, he openly loathed trends like rave music( though to be fair so did a lot of people at the time), and thought he was invincible.
Radio 1 was becoming naff by 1993 and Smashey and Nicey were a coded attack on the station and its ageing, out of touch DJs.

Possibly why a Harry Enfield and Chums DVD box set hasn't appeared yet ?

Some of the sly references makes me wonder if they were coincidental or there were many rumours a long time ago.

They edited out a bit where they were presenting TOTP and Smashie says to a girl "How old are you, me darlin?"

^ too coincidental surely, I thought I wasn't imagining some of the unpc dialogue.

Any idea what the Saville references were? I don't recall any mention of him.

Should Spitting Image ever be repeated, they did have a Jimmy Savile puppet in the second series, but this was 1985 after all.

don't forget Mike Reid and his banning of The Frog Chorus, I mean 'Relax', that was in there, as was a spoof of Kenny Everett

Amazing to think this was originally broadcast more than twenty years ago. I always thought Smashy and Nicey were the best characters Harry and Paul ever created. It was great then - and great now - AND really well acted.

Loved Smash moping over his wife dumping him, amazed they called her Tessa which was the name of Tony Blackburn's wife when he did pretty much the same.

One of the finest spin off stand-alone comedies of all time.

So accurate in the potrayal of those DJ's that I remember at the time wincing through the laughter. A lot of recent ex-DJ's ..er 'activites' were obviously noticed at the time as well, with the references to Smashey's young live-in 'friend' . Also, I always thought nicey was based in part on Roger Scott, and a lot on Tony Blackburn

For me the only DJ that came out of it well was Alan Freeman, who took it all in great part, even sending himself up, but for me he was always a class above the rest of them anyway.

Alan Freeman used to be involved in said 'activities.'
