Re Scofe's telethon, does this mean the Itv family will broadcast programmes through the night (on a Monday into Tuesday? ) or will he have to present 7 hours of ITV casino?

(Be hilarious if he did, he might wonder what he did to serve such penance! ) :-)

I get the feeling the soaps are going to struggle on Christmas Day if these lacklustre ratings keep up much longer.

That is a very good question. I didn't think of that.

Miranda Hart has just announced on Radio 2 that the two Christmas specials will be the last ever two episodes of the sitcom.

Surely it has to get the Christmas Day slot?

To be fair, Corrie did lose quite a bit more than it normally does Monday to Wednesday, it's down over a million from the 8.30pm episode, as well as being down 0.66m week on week. Last week and Monday did have the trial though, whereas as last night's was just a regular episode albeit with the return of Cilla.

Disappointed that the last 2 Miranda specials are the last. :(

Best to go out on a high though...

Same here :( But I agree with you it's best to go out on a high. I think we could see pretty high ratings for the two specials.

A shame but it was expected, could see them rating even higher than they would have done though. I'm hoping each episode is longer than 30 minutes, they could probably get a 45 minute episode in on Christmas Day.

These two episodes will bring it in line with The Vicar of Dibley's episode count, which I bring up because I think it's very likely that Miranda will end with the main character's wedding like that did.

I could see Miranda and MBB pairing up on both Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

In fact both days could have identical schedules eg:

    8.00 EE
    9.00 Miranda
    9.30 MBB

    Boring BBC1.... ;-)

I stopped watching Waterloo Road when it moved, it hasn't been the same since, the figures have really slipped too. 2.8m for 8PM on BBC ONE is poor.

Abysmal figure for a peak time BBC1 drama showing how absurd the move to Scotland really was. When it was filmed in Rochdale it still went down as a BBC Scotland production and would have been in their quota.

Its in no way surprising that Corrie has dropped. It would be more surpising if it topped 8.5m. Its just so awful right now, its going to get thrashed on Christmas Day and rightly so.

Sarah Platt is also returning to Corrie next Spring. Another past character brought back by Blackburn to ruin.

    Yes boring BBC 1 ;-)

That would be ratings dynamite and they could maybe stick Esio Trot at 6:30 on New Year's Day. A surefire ratings winner.

No surprise as she's just too busy to do another series. I thought maybe another special here and there. Just a shame that when it crosses to BBC1 and becomes huge, it ends.

Absolutely right. Its a big drop from Monday and well down on last week as well. Some seem very quick to jump on EE whenever it drops but not so for CS.

It was bad enough that Waterloo Road moving to Scotland stretched credibility, it also meant several characters leaving as the actors didn't want to relocate. One of the stupidest things the BBC ever did. What a moronic idea!

The ratings have been in the toilet for several years. Absolutely atrocious ratings for a primetime drama on a main channel. Charlotte Moore was nuts to commission 20 episodes. That's twenty hours of TV with bad ratings. Idiot.

Miranda Hart confirms BBC sitcom will come to an end with Christmas specials

“This is the first time I’m saying it out loud so it’s a bit weird!” star admitted on the Steve Wright show on Radio 2 this afternoon

'I’m doing two Christmas specials but they are going to be the finale of the show, full stop'
Miranda Hart has called time on her hit sitcom, announcing this year’s two Christmas specials will “be the finale of the show, full stop”.

Speaking on the Steve Wright show on Radio 2 this afternoon, the 41-year-old revealed the BBC 1 ratings winners would be ending after three series.

“This is the first time I’m saying it out loud so it’s a bit weird!” she admitted, responding to a question about her upcoming book The Best of Miranda.

Asked how the idea for the book came about, she replied: “Well, because I’m actually coming to the end of the whole sitcom.”

Miranda, who writes and stars in the semi-autobiographical comedy, continued: “So I’m doing two Christmas specials but they are going to be the finale of the show, full stop.”

“I wanted to do a book to celebrate the series and celebrate all the people who have supported it and watched it. So they get to see the scripts and some backstage gossip and all that sort of thing,” she added.

In July, Miranda told Alan Carr the show would not return for a full series.

“I am writing a new series. I have only just started writing. It will be a couple of specials. I am in a privileged position as I can decide what I am doing," she said.

“It won't be a full series. Everybody wants me to get with Gary. That is the general vibe. There will be a special at Christmas.”

Yes and usually when EE drops that much there's a clash of some sort behind it. Also, to correct my previous post, Corrie was actually down 0.56m week-on-week, not 0.66m.

Corrie is still able to pull in viewers for big episodes but can't seem to hold on to them, EastEnders was like that a few years ago and then when the big episodes never lived up to expectation they stopped bothering altogether, now they're still struggling to bring them back despite big storylines and massive improvements in the everyday episodes. Corrie could end up in a similar place in a year or two.

Now don't ask me where I've got this from, but I've got it in my head that the BBC are showing one MBB at Christmas with the film on New Years Day, and the second special is held back until next Christmas.

I'm not sure where I have read it or heard it somewhere - sometimes it is scary inside my head :o

Coronation Street this time last year 2013 was when Corrie started to go downhill with 'The Tina Show' taking over.

    Monday
    7:30pm 9.79m (42.7%) ...............................8.14m (37.5%)
    8:30pm 9.42m (38.3%)...............................8.53m (36.6%)

    Wednesday
    7:30pm 8.71m (40.1%)..................................7.46m (36.3%)

    Friday
    7.30pm 8.07m (39.3%)
    8.30pm 7.98m (35.7%)

And remember this week was a promoted week and and big story. I'm confused why ITV don't seem to be doing anything about the fall in viewership.

Channel 5 could push Big Brother to 11pm as it looks to go more upmarket under Viacom and be less reliant on the reality show, claims The Independent:

Keep it live at 9pm/10pm but move it over to 5* then they can have a live hour at 11pm if they wish back on the main channel

More than making up for the lack of Sherlock. In fact I'd dare say the finale of Miranda might even do better than Sherlock..

No way the movie is getting a TV release this soon though.
