What happened to those annoying 'quiz TV' programmes?

I'm sure most of us here remember the sort of show I'm on about, ITV used to run something called Quizmania at night, and I believe there was also a dedicated channel on Sky called The Great Big British Quiz, there was probably also lots of different sorts of this programme format going. Where there'd be a relatively simple question, but nearly every answer people gave would be wrong, and the show would rake in the cash from £1.50 calls.

Can anyone shed any light on what happened to them? They seemed to all disappear from TV at once. Was there a new regulation put in place? I used to really like Quizmania, some of the hosts were brilliant.

I remember Quiz Night which used be on late night ITV possibly only on Granada though, around late eighties/early nineties. I think it was presented by Stuart Hall.

From what I just learnt from wiki, Quizmania, Quiz Call and their ilk basically caused too much controvercy by their scandals.

They were all caught blocking calls, not giving out the cash prizes, cutting corners and one occasion, telling one caller their answer was wrong and then 2 hours later, giving the prize to someone else who gave the same answer as the previous caller.

So they were stopped at the beginning of 2007.

I used to watch them on my many nights of insomnia. Annoyingly I'd fall asleep on the couch waiting to hear the "right" answer.

Quiz Night was shown by various ITV Networks. Don't remember Stuart Hall ever presenting it though. The only presenter I remember presenting it was Ross King.

EDIT: Just looked up on YouTube. And you're right, Stuart Hall did present it as well.

Loved Quizmania it was brilliant never rang up though, but all the presenters and crew had great chemistry and were great fun to watch, The Mint was ok but it took its self too seriously.

Used to love a bit of late night Quiz Call. Just remember the Irish presenter shouting "The 8th of May your birthday won for yooouuuuu!" on the advert that was shown on it every fifteen minutes :D

Do you think that they could come back at some time.

Best tv decision ever to cancel. They were the equivalent of today's payday loan adverts, which should also be stopped. They just prey on the stupid, poor, vulnerable - or all three!

Quizmania was brilliant after falling in from a night out :o. Strip away the quiz and there was actually a half decent (but very trashy) TV show in there somewhere. The same with The Mint, but they were the only two of those types of programmes I could actually handle, the rest were terrible.

ITV also took it a step further and had the ITV Play channel for a few months. It got closed down when all the rip off things started, featuring programming such as the This Morning Puzzlebook.

Probably not, they're damaged goods now after all the scandals were exposed a couple of years ago.

A particularly bad phone in quiz was "Grab A Grand" on some of the small digital channels, the same puzzle would stay on screen for hours and the supposed "callers" had the most ridiculous voices and bad accents.

I remember watching these when I couldn't sleep! Good grief. The questions were always so daft: I tended to catch one where it was a wordsearch/crossword style box of letters and you had to fill in the blanks and guess the words. The catch being, they'd be really vague and common words. So it might be P - - T: could be Post, Part, Past, etc...

I always thought they were a little fishy though. The host would stand there begging for a caller, then low and behold, somebody's decided to ring in...

    Ah Quizmania :)
I'm pretty sure Greggles (was that his name?) used to post on these forums.

I really liked Quizmania but wasnt daft enough to ring in. Quizmania worked because of the banter between the hosts, callers, and even the crew. Greggles has been known to lurk around here and is also on Twitter, he's tweeted me once or twice.

On the whole though it was a fad that declined rapidly.

    They were ridiculous.

The hint was like "A word featuring hand"

People rang in with handcuffs, handbag etc etc

The answer was something insane like handmarigon *Note that word was just made up*.

His version had a pub set theme.

"Jack" was my favourite caller, with his slow, dreary speech!

I actually rang one of these years ago it was 'how many triangles are shown on the screen' the answer I gave wrong, never did get to the bottom of that.

Yes. Essentially they were looking to present what were apparently very simple questions but that actually had exceptionally obscure answers. They pushed the definition of "quiz" to and often beyond breaking point.

I remember once on Quizmania, they absolutely ripped Quiz Call as QC had that trainee on once who only knew the words 'come on' and didn't have a clue what she was doing :D

I use to love the mint especially Kat Shoob and Mark Rumbles chemistry. It got really bad though when instead of lots of games they had one game that would last all night that was a ladder of words. This then got replaced by Glitterball.

Quizmania was brilliant loved Greg Scott on it.

I use to watch Itv play all the time.

I celebrated new year 2007 with Quiz call- how sad!

I have signed autographs from all these shows
