You could also look at the science kits you can get. There's one called 'Hot Wires' that has lots of electronic experiments the kid can do - making a circuit to light a bulb, turn a fan etc.
I bought my son something like this last year where he had to make circuits to light up bulbs and power a little fan. He thought it was fab.
