Assuming Humax sort out the bug which prevents MP3s being played using the digital audio out connection, are there any MP3s actually encoded in surround sound to play through my HT system?

Are you assuming that the hardware or software decoder in the Hummy is capable of playing MP3 Surround? I highly doubt it, as your post says, Humax can't even output digital... Although having said that, what is 5.1 channel sound facility for..? Is it just a Humax gimmick?

Try this site for Fraunhofer's MP3 Surround, which has links to surround sound MP3s:

Or read up om MPEG surround sound here: http://www.chiariglione.org/mpeg/technologies/mpd-mps/

Me too - 99.9999% of all MP3s on this planet are two channel stereo. Clearly Fraunhofer are keen for their surround MP3 system to be used but there are existing 5.1 encoding formats such as those used in MPEG2 streams on DVDs that are more likely to make it as a format for encoding surround music. Or perhaps AAC as will be used in HDDVD/BluRay? But, of course, it all starts with recording studios - most music (apart from film) is still mastered in just plain old stereo so that needs to change before there's a quantity of source material to then be encoded in 5/6/7.1 format X, Y or Z

Anyway the 9200 clearly could never decode such sound as it doesn't have 5/6/7.1 outputs - all it can do is pass the digitally encoded MPEG audio opticaly to the AV amp and then hope THAT has Dolby Digital, DTS, Fraunhofer MP3-surround or whatever
