Marianne Faithful - 'The Ballad of Lucy Jordan'.
Much as I love the Dr Hook song, she made this song her own. Just beautiful.
(It's the song playing from 'Thelma & Louise' when they're driving through the Grand Canyon). I can recommend the soundtrack for that film as well.
Okay, I'm prepared to be ripped to shreds for this, but I prefer Rod Stewarts version of 'Your Song' to Eltons original.
Joan Jett & the Blackhearts - i love Rock n Roll (original by the Arrows)
Blondie - Denis (original Denise by Randy and the Rainbows)
Girls Aloud - Sound of the Underground (original by girl band Orchid)
Adele - Make You Feel My Love (original by Bob Dylan)

Another 2 I didn't know were covers. Maybe there should be a thread for 'Covers You Didn't Know Were Covers'.
The Baseballs' covers of Rihanna's "Umbrella" and Beyonce's "Crazy In Love" (both sung in the style of Elvis circa-1956) are significantly better than the original versions (imo).

Sorry but can't stand her screeching version just like I can't stand Mariah Carey's screeching version of Without You.

I prefer both their versions of 'Hush' to Joe South's original.
