Thanks for putting these up. Always fascinated by old listings.

How was LBC Crown FM different to what went before it? I've read about the financial problems LBC went through, but I'm intrigued as to why this version failed on air.

Capitals FM and Gold were so good in 1992. IIRC they had 3 million listeners between them at that point.

According to http://www.mds975.co.uk/Content/capital_facts.html in 1982 he had a folk music show on Saturdays and you could get tickets to a recording of folk music sessions in the Capital foyer.

I never listened to that show, but I remember listening to an FM soul pirate one Saturday in the 80s, and a friend asking if I was listening to Richard Digance! Maybe the DJ had a similar accent.

Some fascinating reading there Robin. I am guessing the Mike Smith mentioned as being on LBC is the doctor and not Radio 1's version. Also Paul Burnett seemed to have a one hour programme in the middle of the day, later extended, I assume this was a chart rundown of sorts?

Was it Richard Park who moved CT to Capital Breakfast? He had done the lunchtime gig for a few years, and while Graham Dene was said to be Princess Di's favourite, I thought they would have moved him earlier.

I recall Sean Hughes being on GLR mid mornings, that may have been later though.

Sport wise, I take it Radio London didn't bother?

Thanks for posting these Robin, fascinating stuff. By December 1992, Richard Littlejohn would have been doing the morning show on LBC Newstalk.

Richard Digance tells a story of falling asleep on air during his show at Capital and no-one noticing.

Ah you sure about Peter Young still being on Capital in 1985 ?

He was one of Radio Mercury's launch presenters, and I'm sure all through 85 he hosted their Drive Time show, as well as a Saturday night soul show ?

I'm sure he left Capital, (never to return) in 1984 (Along with Duncan Johnson and Kerry Juby who went to Invicta ?) ?

I don't have any old copies but the East Anglian Daily Times - used to provide good listings for:

    BBC Essex
    BBC Radio Suffolk
    Essex Radio
    Breeze AM
Radio Orwell/Saxon Radio and then SGR
    SGR Colchester
    Mellow 1557
    Vibe FM

    In the early/ mid 90s.

They may also have done BBC Radio Norfolk, Broadland 102 & The Beach as well (as their coverage area stretches just about up to North Suffolk) but my memory is not 100% if they did. The Eastern Daily Press will definitely have done the Norfolk stations.

    Yes, it was.

    Think so.

Yes, this often gets around. She'd probably have heard him first at boarding school when he first became Capital's breakfast presenter in 1975, Sevenoaks being within the London broadcasting area.
I recall Sean Hughes being on GLR mid mornings, that may have been later though.

Must have been. Their breakfast and mid-morning presenters were both part of the launch line-up at Virgin a few months after these listings end, of course.
Sport wise, I take it Radio London didn't bother?

Don't think they ever did. Indeed when the newly-launched Capital Gold started doing football commentaries in 1988 they saw it as clear ground to break because, unlike in most other areas, the local BBC service didn't bother.

Possibly not. As my schedules confirm he was back there in 1986, and still there doing a Friday night soul show in early 1990, but as you say he probably left the station in between (who would have been doing 5-7 pm in March 1985?)

As my schedules confirm he did go back there - indeed, according to some audio I have he was back by January 1986 - but you're right that Capital went through a major relaunch in September 1984, mainly because they'd started aiming older to fit in with most other ILR stations, only to find that what worked in those areas didn't work in London, and a new wave of pirates was stealing much of the younger audience. In their March 1983 schedule changes they'd actually shortened both of Greg Edwards' shows (Soul Spectrum had been three hours for years but suddenly shrunk to two), which seems objectively insane considering that most of those pirates were playing that sort of music all the time, like the Light Programme reducing its pop output in 1966.

The September 1984 relaunch also saw the departure of Michael Aspel, the arrival of David Jensen and the Network Chart, and the end of a lot of their more "PSB" Sunday output. Before that they'd never tried to compete with the Radio 1 Top 40, usually playing classical music at that time. You can definitely see the influence of pirate stations on the evening BBC Radio London output I listed from July 1986, an influence that barely seeped into the BBC's national pop output at that point.

Being so close to London, Invicta - along with Mercury and 210 - was a natural station for DJs let go by Capital to join, Dave Cash was there after leaving the main station and before joining Capital Gold. Though being just off the North Sea it also used a lot of people from Caroline.

Indeed, the BBC local stations would be in the relevant Radio Times but the other listings would be very rare indeed, especially Orwell & Saxon Radio listings from the full-service / IBA era when it was much more than just a list of DJs' names.

By the time of the Invicta listings I posted, that's pretty much all it was, but still some familiar names (I assume the TalkSport 'Creatures of the Night' bloke was at Invicta then, though Ian Collins would be a common name, especially for people born in the 1960s).

Indeed. An unbelievably stupid idea because people listened to LBC *because* it didn't try to copy Radio 4 - it was Radio 4 content, sometimes, but done in a non-Radio 4 style, in other words Five Live before the fact, at a time when the BBC couldn't have done such a thing. It was authoritative in its own way but it wasn't a clone.

People who love Radio 4 listen to it because they *really* love it; people who choose commercial radio are always going to want something different. They have utterly different strengths, always did even in the IBA days. That lesson was hammered in by the failure of Crown FM and it was really the moment LBC lost the thread after a long-lasting golden touch (Capital had seemed in serious danger around 1984, but recovered through aiming younger again), and they never really got it back again. That was the impression I got anyway - obviously Five Live coming along clouds the issue.

Interesting how many names from Kiss (and indeed from several other stations listed here) eventually went national. You get a sense in some of these listings of blueprints being set out for what national radio was to become when the last Reithian barriers had been swept away in the 90s and 00s.
    And Is Jez Nelson.....Jez Welham?

Quite possibly a mistake on my part, yes.

Yes BBC Essex/ Radio Suffolk were covered in the Eastern addition of RT. There was a big splash when BBC Essex launched on Guy Fawkes Day 86.

East Anglian Daily Times had a big readership in Mid/North Essex plus South & Mid Suffolk in the pre-Internet era. I have no idea how well they are doing today.

You assume correct about Ian Collins.

It had to be called "BBC Essex" because Essex Radio owned the rights to the names "radio" and "Essex" being used in the same station name, didn't they? (And even if they hadn't, it would have been too confusing to have an Essex Radio and a Radio Essex.) I'm sure "Wiltshire Sound" came into being in the same way - GWR probably still owned the rights to "radio" and "Wiltshire" in the same station name, having previously been Wiltshire Radio.

(You can probably tell from the above that I'm high-functioning autistic ...)

Of course, the above BBC local stations were part of the plan that was supposed to climax with a BBC Radio Dorset being created on my (adopted) home patch, but we know what happened with that, twice ... and from memory Ian Collins on TalkSport had an Estuary accent (I know I tend to think of that as the "default" accent of that station, perhaps wrongly) so coming from Invicta would make sense.

Just found the London Radio Times for the week of BBC Essex's launch (which was mainly about BBC TV's 50th anniversary) - it was in that, as well. And Alex Lester was the first presenter on!

I think the potential confusion was the reason given officially in the Mid 80s for the station being simply BBC Essex.... however these days they are people who call/reference to the BBC station in the county as 'Radio Essex'... I guess it was in part inevitable but the trend to slip the word Radio in front may not have been has stridently checked (at any level) in recent years since the commercial station dropped the 'Essex' name on-air.

I had forgotten Alex Lester was with BBC Essex... he can't have stayed long as I think he started at BBC R2 in 87 or 88.

Yes, although Dave Cash quit Capital originally in 1981 to launch Radio West, where he was the founding PD I think ?

Jez Nelson has a brief entry in Wikipedia:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jez_Nelson

If I remember correctly, he started out on London pirate Solar Radio, where he was briefly known as Jeremy Nelson. He was also a presenter on jazz pirate KJazz, alongside Gilles Peterson and Chris Philips. You can see from his Wikipedia entry that his career in legal radio includes the original Jazz FM, where he was part of a show called Somethin' Else which morphed into the production company Somethin' Else Sound Directions Ltd, which famously won the contract to produce Gardeners' Question Time for Radio 4. Probably the only Radio 4 programme to be produced by a company named after a Miles Davis composition, unless anyone knows different.

Incidentally, those listings show a Jazz FM presenter called Tomek. He used to play Latin jazz, originally also on pirate radio, and I think he may have been Polish. Anyone know what happened to him? He had a rather good voice for radio, with a slight but not intrusive foreign accent.
