Secondary devices and usage

Normally I use about 5 GB a month, but I notice with my niece staying here and using my BT home hub for her internet connection, the usage has hit 6.2 GB already and seems to be jumping at 0.5 GB a day.She will be gone on Sunday, but as she uses her laptop 5 hours a day, can this be a contributing factor to the heavy usage this month?

Sounds like she is streaming video or downloading a fair bit of stuff. Of course that will rack up your data usage as she is connected to your Home Hub.

As she uses it when I'm at work, it doesn't surprise me. However, it's a one off and after Sunday, my usage levels will return to normal.
BT are quite fair as if you go over 10 GB the once, they just send you a nasty e mail telling you not to do it again, or face the consequences.

I've never seen BT as fair, having a 10GB allowance these days is more a case of being miserly. The emails are to get you to upgrade to a more expensive package, the next one up costs another £5 per month and they still only give you 40GB.
You can get unlimited broadband for less than you are probably paying BT.

It's a case of I tend to use 5 GB a month, but my niece, who downloads quite a few clips and is online 4 hours a day, has bumped the allowance up. However, she was out all day yesterday and stayed at her b/f's last night, so my usage was only 0.1 GB, compared with 0.5 GB for Wednesday.

what is her home ISP? if she is with BT then why not ask her to use the fon part of your conectins, as a BT customer, if your opted into fon this wont come out of your alowance, and she can downlaod/upload to her hearts content with no effect on you.

to conect to fon she will need to connect to the fon wifi signal, then go online and put in her/her home details ( ie username/password) via a web browser, to stop her accessing yours change the password.
