If we buy mince from the Butchers and do it from scratch, as people are advising, how do we know it's cow? Is Butcher's meat tracked?

I think the media have slightly misjudged the situation. Of course there is a health concern if there is any possibility that phenylbutazone is present, but once that risk has been dealt with I think that members of the public who are short of cash (40% of Payday loans are being used to buy food - truly astonishing) will welcome meat products which are the equivalent of the fish products I have mentioned. A Lasagne containing "100% meat" is much more likely to be appetising than a product made from 100% beef gristle.
Why not? - If it is 100% safe. Horse Meat, Rabbit, Road Kill. (I jest, but only a little.)
I somewhat do not think that the horse meat found in place of beef is prime cuts, more like more mechanically extracted meat including the lips, noses, ears , genitals and arse holes of the horse.!

Personally, I'd like to see prosecution of the subcontractors in this and the burgers case.

Should be some good discounts on meat based ready meals at the moment!! Probably good deals on veggie stuff as well as supermarkets try to generate increased sales from those temporarily off meat.

Oh dear, environment secretary making a mess of things on BBC news channel. Says he would eat Findus meals.

I can't believe that you have somehow linked this horsemeat scandal to someone's bladder falling out. You should be a tabloid editor.

You are talking about.......fraud. Beef sold as Horse.
I am talking about the major retailers, or manufacturers, saying to the public:
"For this price you can either have a Beef Lasagne which will be made from the lowest grade of meat we can source. Or...you can have a Meat Lasagne which will contain meat of a higher quality."
Now.....If you are saying that you don't trust Tesco, or Asda, or a newly chastened Findus, and that regardless of whatever they say, you will assume that you are eating Horse Lips, then I guess you probably won't be buying anything from them.

Yes it is, anyone selling/serving food must be able to prove a traceable route and that the product complies with the law , so the restuarant can show who the supplier was , the supplier can show the factory / manucfacturer they purchased it from, the factory etc the abbatoir or farm etc .

Was watching the news yesterday and they had a farmer on explaining that every calf in the UK gets a unique number tag in it's ear and it's own passport.

Tell that to Findus, everyone in their supply chain just seems to be blaming the link below them.

Well Findus is not really to blame, they have trusted the suppliers, which is all you can do , you cannot test every dish once its been prepared to check if it has what it is supposed to have. Findus products were made in France who bought their porduct from Romania, so was their a cockup in Romania or was it deliberate and were the French company aware or did they trust their supplier.

Well if I saw a joint of beef in a shop and it said Romanian Beef I would not even consider buying it at any price. Why was a Findus in France buying beef from Romania anyway? One of the last countries I would want to buy anything from.

Surely the mane issue is the fact that they may have deliberately done so?

Shows how easy someone could tamper with a product and get something that could be a threat to public health into the food chain!

Hmm no I think some supermarkets do sell a higher quality range of food products, also you're less likely to get the trampage that places like "lidl" attract.
