This is what I had at the back of my mind for Diclofenac http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-23109314 seems it's just those with certain conditions.
Out of Diclofenac, Ibuprofen and Naproxen, I'm not sure which, if any, is kinder to your stomach (don't take them on an empty stomach )
I think there are schemes you can sign up to to spread the cost of prescriptions (someone may come along here and let you know) Edit: Here it is, a Prescription Prepayment Certificate http://www.nhs.uk/Planners/Yourhealth/Pages/Prescriptioncosts.aspx
Or you can fill in a HC1 form to see if you are eligible for help with costs, it is based on your income and outgoings.

I also ice my neck using the obligatory packet of frozen garden peas, and also I own a tens which is fantastic for blocking the pain signals for me.
I would go back, get everything down on GP record, don't self medicate. If ever there is a time where someone needs proof of it there will be nothing if you've not been to the GP.
I use a water filled one from Mediflow... It really does help...tremendously.

Worth every penny.
But Jarryhack, don't make the mistake I did and keep your head and neck immobilised. I did that for years, after bad advice, and ruined my neck muscles. Now, I need intense exercises to build them back up and they're excruciatingly painful. Keeping your neck muscles effective will help a lot with support for your neck bones.
Edit: sorry, I assumed it was your neck, but it might be your back? If so, muscles are still important.
Celebrex is another non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug to consider along with the other three mentioned above. I've used coated diclofenac in combination with joint paracetamol/codeine tablets to treat a different issue and it was effective and there were no stomach complication but there was a small, temporary itchy rash every six months or so.
